It could have been better than what it's. They way it's executed was poor. Writing style wasn't that good. And gave me a lot of frustration.
TW:Islamophobia, extremists, slut shaming, migration problems, teenage sex, ISIS, culture vs religion, death.
Representation.Matters. But above all ACCURATE representation matters most!!
This year this was the first book that I wanted to throw out of the window and forget about it. Alas!! I didn't because I wanted to know why Muslim reviewers gave it hardly one or two stars and non- Muslims gave it 5 or 4 stars.
After finishing it, well it was easy to understand because there were so many parts that weren't portrayed right.
Things which I liked were:
Islamophobia is affecting Muslims and ISIS, terrorism affected Muslims more than any other race. And how Muslims feel and have to face society's misplaced anger.
Thought-provoking and interesting discussion about how terrorists group use religion to recruit innocent people by bending and manipulating shari'a for themselves.
Things I didn't liked:
I get it parents can be strict and sometimes say harsh thing but seriously desi mother saying to her daughter thatshe doesn't have looks to attract someone so she needs to become doctor blah blah!!!!????? Yea it happens but the way it's executed, was poor.
I think the author did good job in discussing Islamophobia but it's more focused on extremists side than the positive one. And how Muslims who practice Islam more closely are extremists etc and you can make changes as you want in it.
And I would have loved to see more of side characters like kadija and one more character. They both were introduce for such short period of time and forgotten for forever.
Child marriage , there's a law for reason and Islam absolutely doesn't allow it.
I started writing reviews recently. I think I am good at them because of grammar and my approach to understand the writer point of view. So I would like to review books as a reviewer from reedsy.
