How to be a Better Man by Lenny Terra comprises ten parts divided into one hundred compact chapters, a comprehensive compass to enable a teenager who diligently wants to be a man of caliber simple straightforward no-frills advice on the accomplishment of this task. Terra begins his book with a Chapter on “Goal Setting” and ends with “Entertaining at Home”.

In Part One the chapter that resounded most with me was Chapter 10: Overcome your Fears. In Part Three, I thought that the inclusion of a Chapter on Teeth was insightful as it is a key area that can often be neglected and could be quite costly to fix from imprudent decisions such as irregular dental visits. In Chapter Eighty-one: Be a Gentleman Terra advises guys to be, “Be chivalrous. Open doors for women, help them with their coats, make sure they’re comfortable, etc. A true gentleman knows how to treat a lady.” This advice is indeed golden as there are educated gentlemen who need to imbibe the idea that small acts of kindness like assisting someone with a heavy parcel are not demeaning but rather an ennobling deed.

This book ideally targets generation Z male teenagers leading a busy lifestyle with limited time for reading. The chapters are short and range from one and a half to two pages at maximum. Each chapter consists of numerous short paragraphs of one to three lines that favor quick reading. The language is simple, error-free, and accompanied by a consultative register that facilitates easy and light reading.

While this book covers a range of issues surrounding: Personal Development, Relationships, Style, Fitness and Wellness, Manliness, Habits and Mindset, Money and Career, Women, and manners and Etiquette, the short chapters do not allow for in-depth exploration but offer quick invaluable advice on each subject that a caring and an emotionally intelligent father will give to his son.

Chapter One: Goal Setting.

One of the most important things you can do for your personal development is setting goals. When you have a goal, you have something to work towards and a target to aim for. This can help keep you motivated and on track.

There are different types of goals you can set, such as short-term goals, long-term goals, and lifestyle goals. It is important to set realistic, achievable, and challenging goals to motivate you.

When setting your goals, it is important to be specific. For example, instead of saying “I want to be more successful,” say “I want to earn an annual salary of $75,000.” And don’t forget to write your goals down! This will help keep them top of mind and make them feel more real.

Once you’ve written your goals down, come up with a plan of action for how you’re going to achieve them. This might include breaking your goal down into smaller steps, setting a deadline, and creating a budget.

How to set goals that work for you:

Be specific

When you are specific, you can measure your progress and know when you’ve achieved your goal.

Make them challenging but achievable.

If your goals are too easy, you won’t be motivated to achieve them. But if they’re too difficult, you’ll become discouraged and give up.

Write them down

This will help you keep them top of mind and make them feel more real.

Come up with a plan of action.

To stay on track and achieve your goals, you need a plan of action. This include breaking your goal down into smaller steps and creating a budget.

Set a deadline.

If you don’t set a deadline, your goal might never get done. It is important to set a date by which you plan to achieve your goal.

How to know what your goals should be:

Think about what you want to achieve in the long term.

What are your lifestyle long-term goals? These are the goals you want to achieve regardless of whether they have a time frame associated with them.

Think about what you need to do to achieve your lifestyle goals.

For example, if you want to lose weight, you’ll need to set a goal for how much weight you want to lose and develop a plan of action.

Think about what you want to change about yourself.

Do you want to be more confident? More organized? Be more mindful? This can be your personal development goal.

Think about what you’re good at and what you enjoy doing.

What are your strengths and passions? Knowing this can help you set goals in those areas. For example, if you’re good at public speaking, you might set a goal to give more presentations.

Think about your values and what’s important to you.

What are your personal values? This can be anything from being a good parent to being environmentally friendly.

How to know if your goals are realistic:

Check to see if your goal meets the following criteria:

Are you able to control the outcome?

Can you achieve the goal in a reasonable time frame?

Is the goal challenging enough to motivate you?

Does the goal fit with your values and what’s important to you?

If your goal meets all these criteria, it’s likely a realistic goal. This doesn’t mean that it won’t be challenging, but it should be something that you’re capable of achieving.
