My 13-year-old son automatically gifted this book with one star to build from before we even cracked open the first page simply because Extraterrestrial Life Forms (ELFs) were mentioned and he's all about the ELFs in his current life stage. He thought by the end of the reading, he was automatically going to give it 5-stars because of the "aliens" but he ended up being let down. By the time we had closed the last page, my 8-year-old son gave this book 3-stars; although he didn't really like the storyline, he thought the rhymes were spot on and divine! My girls (12-years-old and 9-years-old respectively) were by far the harshest critics, they (like their Ma) didn't like how Kris Kringle interacted with his wife at the beginning of this book. He came across a tad bit condescending rather than jolly, loving, and kind. They gave this book two-stars and said it was because of the illustrations alone that it received any from them. Ouch!
As for me, the aforementioned Ma, I agree with my 8-year-old son that the rhymes were well done. I also agree with my girls, that the illustrations are so fun that they elevate this book to higher heights than had they been left undone. Therefore, I determined a three-star rating was fair. It's the illustrations that saved this book and took me there!
I don't always read a book's jacket to my children before diving in; especially, when it comes to read aloud's. However, lesson learned, this book's synopsis is a must read prior to jumping in. Otherwise, you're throwing your kids and yourself into a tale that's so unexpected it's almost hard to follow along until you grasp that you are seeing Kris Kringle prior to his becoming Santa Claus! Then, once that's understood, it's up to you to decide, do you like this version of how Santa Claus came to be or are you more of a traditionalist when it comes to XP?
Adults may appreciate the outside of the box, unique, and original thought process of the author and storyline here; but, as for me and my household, we did not. Kudos for the author in trying something new! For unique twists that explain so much in original, never-before-contemplated ways too! My family might be a tough one to impress but there's a multitude of other families that might find this version of Santa to be their favorite and the best!
Whereas I didn't enjoy this book as a book outside of its illustrations. I could see it being adapted and becoming a movie someday! There's a multitude of ways you could spin it: Light-hearted or dark. Perhaps something like The Nightmare Before Christmas? A mixture of light and dark both?
If ELFs are your thing, this book is for you! Treasures untold with the happiness it brings to finally have answers to all of the things.
