Book Review: *Heroic: Expanded Edition* By Phil Earle is a great, gripping book that gives insights into friendships and trauma while unfolding the complications of loyalty against adversity. It is a true expanded edition for the book with added depth, which makes the novel even more worthwhile to read. Sonny, who stays at home, cannot reconcile his life without Jammy while dealing with his own challenges in their rough urban environment. *Heroic* differs because it doesn't only describe the direct outcome of war to soldiers, but also to their community and everyone who awaits their return. In *Jammy Returns*, it shows his evident as well as those hidden marks and scars he received on his return, and so does Earle on handling Jammy's story with real authenticity and delicacy. Portraying post-traumatic stress disorder, harrowing and true to form, and more so brings about those hitherto silenced truths. The setting holds a very powerful place in terms of the storyline's intensity. Earle shows the urban space as full of challenges—there is crime, poverty, and limited job opportunities. He adds a sense of urgency to this friendship between Sonny and Jammy, telling how their bonding serves as some kind of a lifeline in that unforgiving world. The richness provided by secondary characters, such as Sonny's family and other people in his neighborhood, turns the story into a multi-dimensional portrayal of the community and struggles it faces. The writing of Earle is poignant yet accessible, and the book can therefore be of good interest to young adult readers as well as adults. The dialogue sounds fairly naturalistic, mirroring the rhythm and diction of the characters in their world. The pacing balances quiet introspection with charged, kinetic scenes of high tension. The expanded edition provides new insights and more content that deepen the original story.
