Worth reading 😎

Really wish there were less characters, and more focus on one or two characters and their storylines.

Synopsis

Grandview Surf Beach produces a fun, reliable wave, friendly to beginners and attractive to tourists. To Robert Walsh, it is less a surfing destination than a place steeped in the memories of the family he lost. During none of his semi-annual visits did he ever suspect Grandview would one day become the center of his world.
Empowered by his considerable wealth, Robert enjoys a freedom uncommon to his millennial peers. No amount of money, however, can fill the emptiness inside him.
Letty knows she isn't cut out for the game the other girls play. She'll never have the perfect beach body. Men look past her like she was part of the scenery, apart from her boyfriend, a man she does not love.
Esme longs for the affections her husband, Sean, gives freely to other women. Sean's concern is the pursuit of any woman with whom he experiences mutual attraction. Heather, Sean's sister, seeks to save her brother's marriage, but will her stay in Encinitas lead to the imperiling of her own?

Grandview is a place that holds the cherished memories of Robert’s past, but soon becomes the place that holds hope for his future. In a revelation of love for his lifelong friend, Letty, Robert finds himself ready to move on.

While Robert and Letty’s relationship begins, the relationships of those in their lives seem to begin to unravel. Letty’s sister Esme finds herself facing Sean’s infidelity. In an attempt to help save her brother’s marriage, Sean’s sister Heather soon finds herself following in his footsteps.

To be honest, I struggled to write a summary for this book. The book started with Sean who I assumed would be one of the main characters and the storyline would follow him. However, there were suddenly several other characters who were introduced, which was pretty overwhelming trying to keep up with everyone. I also struggled with all of the disjointed chapters that focused on some of the more minor characters, such as Maddie. While there were parts where these characters played an integral piece, I don’t believe entire chapters were necessary.

With all of these characters, it was really difficult to get a sense of who the main characters were supposed to be and what the actual storyline is about. This also made it difficult for me to connect with any of the characters. While Robert and Letty’s story seemed to wrap up, the other characters’ stories were left open ended. After devoting so much time to reading pieces of their stories throughout the book, especially Heather’s and Sean and Esme’s, there didn’t seem to be much closure.

I didn’t dislike the book, it almost gave me of a Desperate Housewives vibe - wealthy couples whose relationships seem perfect on the surface, but there are secrets and trauma that lie deep down. I just wish the author would have chosen one or two main characters to focus on and let the story lead naturally from there, rather than focusing on so many characters and their separate storylines.

I’m an avid reader with a slight obsession for anything romance or thriller. If it’s romance AND thriller, I’ll likely become your next biggest fan 😊

Mistakes

Making his way back home, Sean was grateful for the intermittent road work. Each cluster of workmen, with their orange cones and noisy machines, caused the northbound lanes of State Route 163 to slow. Among that impatient throng of drivers, perhaps he alone desired to remain.

The massive Lincoln kept him well-insulated from the heat of the day and rode smoothly over uneven surfaces. The vehicle’s refinement, however, was not the reason he appreciated the extra time behind the wheel. Sean didn’t care much about cars.

He had purchased the Black Label Continental to impress a pert, young lady from his CrossFit gym. This fantastic creature (called Stephanie) had blonde dreadlocks and many tattoos. She had a nose ring and loved beach volleyball, vegan restaurants, and big, expensive sedans. The woman was wonderful to observe and better to touch. Compared to Esme, Sean’s wife, her young body was remarkably taut and hairless. Esme had become much softer over time, more shapeless with each child. When Stephanie did her box jumps, every part of her followed instantly.

And now he was in trouble.

A man of words, smiles, and handshakes, Sean was famous in[…]”

Trace LarkinI am curious, Jessica, what your opinion is of Anna Karenina itself. Also To The Lighthouse. Those two in particular.

Trace LarkinJessica, is this the proper avenue to contact you? I am not sure you saw my earlier message. Anna Karenina obviously set my guideposts, and for whatever reason the other book haunted me the entire time I wrote it. I am interested in juxtaposing your opinions of those masterpieces with my humble work.
