Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward’s 2024 book Getting Ready for My Tonsil Surgery: Tonsil Book for Kids – Preparation and Recovery is the latest addition to her Getting Ready series and provides a fun and informative introduction to the fantastic world of the tonsil.
As the title suggests, Getting Ready is a practical guide for tonsil surgery, which is aimed at young readers. However, the book is more than that. It presents complex medical concepts that take the reader on a journey from symptoms, to surgery, to the recovery room, and back home to celebrate with thirty-one flavors of ice cream stacked up to the ceiling, popsicles, water, juice, and every flavor of smoothie. Or at least we can all dream.
Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward presents a variety of interactive questions to help children and adults alike learn about the purpose of tonsils, and what to expect during and after a tonsil surgery, which can be a very scary idea. Even more, she inspires kids to think about their own tonsils and immune systems. Of course, the book is not just for kids. There are helpful notes for parents and guardians too. Each page contains interesting facts and questions to keep your children engaged in reading and learning about physical wellness and health.
On top of that, the illustrations by Moch Fajar Shobaru are a cute and reminiscent blend somewhere between manga and Ponyo. The book is filled with colorful, imaginative images that spark the reader’s attention on every page, though some are better than others.
In summary of Dr. Fei Zheng-Ward’s 2024 book Getting Ready for My Tonsil Surgery Tonsil Book for Kids, I give this book four out of five stars (4 of 5) for providing useful information in an engaging, charming, and concise manner. It will make you want to read all the Getting Ready books.
