Heading to the hospital for surgery can be a big adventure, but it can also be pretty daunting — especially for kids. Getting Ready for My Surgery is here to help! This book is like a friendly guide, taking you by the hand and showing you exactly what you can expect, from the moment you step into the hospital to the happy moment when it's all done.

Ever wondered what a hospital gown looks like or how a blood pressure cuff feels? Want to know why doctors need to check your heart and lungs, or what that funny little clip on your finger is for? We've got all the answers in here, plus a fun game of 'hospital I-spy' that turns the whole thing into a bit of an adventure.

Whether you're a brave explorer or feeling a little nervous, this book is for you. It's packed with information, encouragement, and little bits of fun to help you feel ready for your surgery. So, take a deep breath, put on your superhero cape (backwards, of course!), and let's get ready for surgery together.

Your adventure awaits!

Kids are filled with anxiety when they have to visit a doctor's office or hospital. What will happen there? Will they get a shot? Will what the doctor does hurt them? Will they have to stay overnight, alone? Can they bring a teddy bear? Getting Ready for My Surgery: Preparing Kids for Anesthesia helps young readers understand what they can expect if they ever need surgery. The writer educates them on commonly used medical equipment and helps kids understand their purpose. But before kids can meet a doctor or anesthesiologist, they must check in and receive their armband.

When I read the story's first page, featuring a little girl arriving with her mother, I assumed we'd be following ONLY her journey from admission to discharge. That wasn't the case. The writer switched focus from multiple children in pivotal moments of their hospital stay. We saw a little boy wearing street clothes and then decked out in a gown, superhero cap, and socks. We see the same child get his blood pressure taken. We witness another child giggling from the laughing gas and then falling peacefully asleep.

It's okay to be nervous or scared about an upcoming medical procedure. If your child has butterflies in their tummies and is wondering what the operating room will look like, then have no fear; the illustrator has simplified the room, showing kids they have nothing to fear. They also share that doctors and nurses can help ease surgical fears with a sweet-tasting medicine. The writer doesn't say there'll be zero pain once the patient wakes up, but a little girl's expressive face warns kids that some pain is involved. The author makes sure that kids know that the staff will be ready with meds to make them feel better.

Will a child have to stay overnight after having surgery? Possibly. That depends on the type. If that's the case, the author reassures kids that nurses will work hard to make every child feel safe and comfortable. The book didn't state this, but most (if not all) hospitals will allow a parent or guardian to stay overnight with the child.

Walking inside a hospital and facing the unknown can be overwhelming and scary. This beautifully crafted storybook shows young readers what to expect once they enter the building, meet the staff, see into the operating room, and wake up from anesthesia. There is also a special note for parents and guardians, giving valuable information about when to stop food and liquid intake before the start of surgery.

Getting Ready for My Surgery: Preparing Kids for Anesthesia is a must-read if your child is scheduled for surgery or has questions about the process. Amazon's recommended reading age is 4-8 years.
