Regan Macaulay is an award-winning author of several novels, short stories, and children’s literature, including her newest book Dog Band, which is illustrated by Wei Lu.
In Dog Band, Alfie has a dream to start a band. He decides to ask his best friends to join him, to which they agree. Unfortunately, they cannot decide what kind of music to play. They decide to ask their friends for suggestions on the music they should play. They have many friends, so they get many suggestions. Will their friends help them decide what kind of music to play?
Dog Band is an interesting story. The illustrations are colorful and engaging. I like that the reader is introduced to a lot of different kinds of music and instruments. The story teaches problem-solving in a healthy way.
I wanted to love this story; I thought the concept was cute and loved the cover illustrations. However, several things did not work for me. First, the introductions to the different friends were too long, and in some cases, too complicated to pronounce for most young children. The reference to poodle-skirts and the 1950s will not make sense to any child reading this book. Second, it felt like too many animals, so I lost interest in the story. Finally, the book did not come to a satisfactory ending. Most children will not like that. The age that the Dog Band is geared to, will still have an adult reading to the child, or with the child. This is not a book that I would ever choose to read aloud, for the reasons already mentioned.
Children who enjoy books with animals will enjoy the colorful illustrations and the many animals that are introduced in the Dog Band. While this book was not for me, I am sure that others will enjoy it.
