Crossing the Line

Loved it! 😍

Totally riveting, action-packed drama, with a perfect mix of friction between two EMT crew members!

I was very much impressed with this action-packed novel about two EMT technicians who had their own inner battles to contend with, apart from the daily stresses and demands of their job.

Nathan lost his leg in Afghanistan and suffers from PTSD. Megan's husband is physically abusing her. Things just spiral out of control at home, but at work, Nathan proves to be the one true thing she can rely on. Oddly enough, when Nathan was first assigned to be her partner, Megan doubted that he could handle the rigorous demands of the job with only one good leg. For his part, Nathan is tired of people assuming that he isn't as able as everyone else to do his job. He has worked very hard at reintegrating himself back into the workforce.

At one point, he snaps at Megan when she automatically assumed that he wouldn't be able to carry a heavy patient down several flights of stairs. He is fed up and makes sure she understands that he is not taking any more flack from her:

" [...] That was patronizing. [...] I want you to assume my ability. Assume I can do anything you can. Isn’t that what you want from them?” he said, pointing toward the fire department side of the station.

Megan has to admit that being a female EMT also comes with built in prejudices and assumptions of inability. She was just as guilty as her male coworkers of assuming Nathan's "inability." As she continues to work alongside him, Megan comes to realize that Nathan is indeed fully capable of doing his job. He even has a thing or two to teach the entire EMT crew, because he is very skilled at rapeling down hills and doing cave rescues - a skill which stands Megan in good stead when her abusive husband plots to get even with her for finally calling it quits on their marriage and divorcing him.

After the initial few chapters, which were taken up with character development and focusing on Megan's abusive marriage, the second half of this book really picked up the pace and had me glued to my ebook. One crisis merged into the other, Megan and Nathan started to become attracted to one another - things really started to heat up! - and then everything came to a head and Megan and Nathan's world seemed to shatter to pieces. Turns out that there might have been a medical reason behind Todd's abuse. Can Megan turn her back on Todd in his hour of need? Or did the medical condition just reveal Todd's true nature? You will have to read this novel to find out!

But I will say this: while Nathan does come to Megan's physical rescue once or twice while on the job, she ultimately saves herself and chooses to stop covering up for Todd's past abuse. I really enjoyed this medical drama, with the dash of sizzling romance thrown in to sweeten the story! I am glad that the author persevered and revised her original manuscript. This updated manuscript was obviously worth the effort!

My thanks to the author, publisher and Reedsy Discovery for a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
