Changing Rhythms:  Poems on Life, Fantasy, and Art by Leah Chrestien is a unique collection of widely varied topics in an equally varied poetic style. You will find the poems full of liberating thoughts, as she takes us on a journey of her imagination in topics that speak of love, heartache, fantasy, womanhood, and even some highly sensitive humanity issues.  It’s quite likely that many of us have experienced many of the same which gives the writing a warm familiarity.

Although one may be inclined to read a book on a smaller base of topics and styles, the book is enjoyable, surprising, and welcoming.  As our author stated in the preface, “there is a little bit of something to spark the interest of my readers from various walks of life.” This is refreshingly true.  Upon reading through each section of topics, one can easily form clear favorites and then find even more favorites on a second read-through.

Poetry is such a personal experience and pulls emotions from our souls in unexpected ways – both pleasant and otherwise.  As a reader, one can read the collection in its entirety or simply by sections, as Ms. Chrestien has carefully divided the subjects into six particular groups.  For some, perhaps spending time on different sections based on my particular mood for the topic and then even more time on certain marked poems based on the individual writing style and use of language.

This book is a nice addition for one who is looking to expand their experience with poetic literature and varied styles, both as a reader and as an inspired writer.  Be ready for some surprises, some deep-thinking, and some moments of reflection.

In addition, Chrestien’s Changing Rhythms can quite possibly provide encouragement for future writers to share their feelings and experiences with poetic, life-altering perspectives, too.

My Love Dream

 I've rowed on for many a mile,

for hours deep into the silent night,

with not a mere soul in near sight,

under the bleak and dim wintry light.

I row down the winding stream

to see you for perhaps one more time;

in passionate strokes, I stir the waves

in a rhythmic jiggle and visual rhyme.

Rowing on over waters wild

under a pale, silvery waning moon -

in mellow whispers and dulcet tones,

I reach deep down and hum our tune.

Swirling mists, misshapen forms -

phantasms of a lifetime by your side;

in your loving arms, I embrace my role

as your truest friend, lover and bride.

A silver giant with bare branches,

arms outstretched towards the moon -

under its soft glow on the lovers bridge,

we fell in love, all too fast, too soon.

In tireless haste, I row further on

under grey and Stygian starless skies,

when in front of my eyes, there arose

a million floating orbs of fireflies.

You love so much, yet promise little,

fill my head with hopes of morrow;

yet, not a drop quenches my thirst;

why then, do I drown in sorrow?

I've rowed now for countless miles.

Will I ever reach my journey's end?

Will you plant a kiss upon my lips?

Will you greet me at the river bend?

My once hopeful spirit weakens

as each murky dusk turns to dawn;

beguiled by love and lofty dreams,

with a longing heart, I row on.
