A very timely, imaginative, and inspiring book sprinkled with humor and fun-filled adventures to help the entire family cope with COVID-19.
This book is about a family sheltering in place during Covid-19 and how they learn to get along and live together as a family.
There is something very moving and heartfelt in the children’s book written by Susana Basanty titled “Can This Family Survive Quarantine?” Perhaps it’s because each person has been affected somehow by the recent pandemic that changed the world. Perhaps it’s because it narrates the story of a family where almost everyone else belongs. Many of the world’s problems seem so far away, but when it reaches our homes and affects the lives of those we love the most, it’s something that would always leave a vulnerable spot within us.
How do you even begin to tell innocent children what a pandemic is? How do you simplify something that seems to complicate every aspect of our lives? That’s where the book can assist many parents, teachers and guardians in teaching kids the skills they need to stay safe and to survive COVID-19. Through its colorful and wistful illustrations that quickly attract the attention of children, it is able to show various scenarios that depict the kind of life we’re currently living in. It is also able to illustrate various safety measures such as washing one’s hands and wearing masks.
At a time when most of us feel so helpless, what do we tell our children? How do we advise them to live without the normal things they used to enjoy such as playing outdoors and interacting with their friends? Is there some way they can see their new routine as something valuable and worth the adjustments they’re about to make?
This book powerfully explores the role of each person in the family. It gives various examples of activities that one can make to be productive even at home. Where fear can cripple many, it encourages teamwork and a sense of responsibility as a means to overcome the problems at hand.
Realistic, imaginative, fun-filled and inspiring, this book is highly recommended to families affected by the pandemic. Highly relevant and eye-opening, it is a story we can all relate to during these times of crisis. We all need something to change our perspective and to give us hope. Sprinkled with a sense of humor, it is also something that can lighten our burdens as we all strive to survive COVID-19.

This book is about a family sheltering in place during Covid-19 and how they learn to get along and live together as a family.
The Wellmeyer family: Dad, Mom, Ethan, Sophie, and their puppy Roscoe are all in the family room.
Dad turns up the volume on the television.
There have been many news reports, and he is worried.
Mom turns it off, and they hug. Sophie joins in, “Me too!” Ethan asks, “What’s happening, Pops?”
“Children, the world is changing, but we are a strong family unit; a team,” says Dad.
“Team Wellmeyer!” says Ethan while high fiving Dad. 2
Dad continues,
“Yes, we are!” Hugging him. “There is a new illness known as COVID-19; it’s a virus that spreads from person to person. The best way for us and others not to get sick is to stay home and not go outside for a while.”
Ethan says, “So, no going to school?” in a sad voice.
Sophie says, “I’m going to miss my friends.”
Ethan is thinking, and he says. “Can we still go to sports practice?”
“Ethan, this virus is dangerous, and everyone except essential workers will be staying home,” Mom answers.
To which Ethan replies, “I’m an essential worker? I’m on a baseball team, and I’m the captain. My team needs me?”
Sophie replies, “I am a sential worker; my friends need me to play with them.”
Mom says, “Children, those are excellent points. Essential workers are doctors, police officers, nurses, firefighters, sanitation collectors, ambulance drivers, food factory workers, grocery store employees, postal workers, and medical companies. We can’t live without essential things. We need essential workers to provide the most important things. Bus drivers, truckers who drive our food, farmers, the electrical company, water company, gas company, and gas stations.”
“I want to be a farmer!” “I want to be a doctor!”
“I want to be an ambulance driver!” say the kids, respectively. “That’s wonderful!” says Mom.
“If we can’t be essential helpers because we are kids, what can we do? This is going to be boring,” says Ethan.
“I’m going to miss my friends so much,” Sophie says.
“Especially my teacher, Mrs. Trendle, she’s my most bestest, favorite kindergarten teacher ever!”
“How many times have you been in kindergarten? Once? Okay, then, she can’t be your most bestest favorite teacher ever,” says Ethan.
