Your child is about to be a big brother or sister! But how do you explain what's happening inside Mommy's belly?
Before I Was Born is a children's book for new siblings that explains how their baby brother or sister grows during pregnancy--first they're as big as a seed, then a pear, then as large as a watermelon!
Pairing sweet illustrations with a melodic rhyme, this book is the perfect baby shower book or new sibling gift.
As both a Mum to four children, and having been a doula, I was instantly drawn to this book. I loved the simplicity of the illustrations and yet they were so complex at the same time.
'Before I Was Born', by Corey Anne Abreau and illustrated by Samantha Williams begins with an artistic single picture of a newly expectant mother and the explanation of how long pregnancy takes for a new baby to be born. With splashes of colour, the illustrations pop on each page and create a calming focus for the reader. There are different examples of various fruits and vegetables to show the sizes that a baby grows to be, which throughout the book are highlighted at each stage of a mother's pregnancy.
The book takes you through each month, using a language that is simple enough for children who may wonder what's happening in their Mum's belly to understand, yet interesting enough for the parent who is reading it to convey. The rhyming of each paragraph also keeps the story upbeat and informative from a child's perspective.
With attention to detail from the illustrator, Samantha manages to capture the many emotions expressed by a mum-to-be, ranging from joy and happiness, to tiredness and surprise. All are shared in such a positive manner, that it would be sure to encourage a soon-to-be brother or sister to feel excitement and anticipation for their new arrival, without the fear of the unknown, which I know can be a worry for some siblings. The illustrations include the older children in their mother's experience, listening to music and bonding with their new baby in the womb, which made my heart warm.
This book captures the excitement of pregnancy, whilst delivering a feeling of calm. It provides a charming sense of enthusiasm for any growing family to share and is suited for children between the ages of seven to twelve years old. It would be a wonderful addition to any family's bookshelf.
