When creating stories, many writers focus on what happens without enough consideration as to the why. And that why is all about character. What does your character want? Why do they want it? What are they willing to sacrifice to get it? Novel planning begins with answering these character-focused questions. The key is ensuring your character has clear goals, both tangibly and emotionally.

This seminar focuses on techniques to create characters who feel real, with motivations, desires, wants, and needs. We will explore how characters are actually a novel-writing secret weapon and how to wield them for the most effective results in their stories.
Students will leave with a key understanding: characters drive the plot, not the other way around.

Author, editor and book coach
Lori Gold is the author of ROMANTIC FRICTION (Harper Collins, 2025), a Zibby Media Summer Read and Most Anticipated Book of 2025 selection as well as an NPR Book of the Day. ROMANTIC FRICTION is her book club fiction debut, an “inside publishing” caper that sparks discussions of AI in the creative space. Her followup, KISS, MARRY, KILL, releases from Harper Collins on April 7, 2026. She is also the author of the adult historical, LOVE, THEODOSIA, and four novels for young adults (all under Lori Goldstein). She currently lives outside of Boston, where she fosters a writing community through her creative writing classes, book coaching, and writing retreats.
