How to Write a Novel Scholarships

We offer fully-funded tuition to promising writers with demonstrated financial need. Writers are invited to submit a 1,000-word writing sample along with a 300-word personal statement explaining their interest in a scholarship. The application portal for September 2024 will remain open from July 1st to July 29th, midnight EST.

Who is eligible for this scholarship?

You must be over 18 to apply for the scholarship. We invite you to explain your reasons for applying in your personal statement.

How do I apply?

To apply for one of our full-tuition scholarships, please fill out this form to submit your 1,000-word writing sample and your 300-word personal statement.

What should my personal statement include?

Your statement should outline why you want to take this course, the project you plan to work on, and how the scholarship would benefit your writing. While the maximum word count is 300 words, it’s okay to keep your statement shorter.

What should I use as my writing sample?

Your writing sample should be 1,000 words of your best fiction. Ideally, it’s from the novel you plan to work on during the course. However, feel free to send along a piece of flash fiction, the first page of a story, or any other fiction sample. Poetry, drama, and nonfiction will not be considered.

How many scholarships will be awarded?

We will award three full-tuition scholarships for the September 2024 session.

When is the application deadline?

Applications close on July 29th at midnight EST.

When will applicants be notified?

Winners will be announced by August 26th, 2024.

How are applications judged?

Applications are judged on demonstrated need, the promise of the project, and the strength of the writing sample. All applications will be read by at least two members of the Reedsy Editorial Team before a shortlist is forwarded to Tom Bromley, Head of Learning. Tom will pick three winners in consultation with the editorial team.
