As an editor, I see my role as someone who helps authors communicate with their audience. Every writer has strengths and weaknesses, whether it's dialogue, setting, action, pacing, humor, or the many other aspects that go into crafting a story. My focus is on making those strong elements pop out to readers, and offering advice to shore up those weaker aspects while also teaching authors how they can make them stronger in the future.
Developmental editing means working with an author to understand their vision for a story, and making certain that it ends up on the page. We'll work together to craft subtle but powerful ways to coax readers into being fully invested in finding out what happens next. Along the way, we'll clear up any plot inconsistencies, out-of-character moments, and determine what details could be added to give your story that extra nudge from good to great.
Proofreading is all about removing those final barriers that could unintentionally jostle a reader back into the real world versus being immersed in your story. I'll be an extra set of eyes looking for, and correcting, out of place commas, weird spaces, misspellings, and awkward grammar to ensure that readers forget they're reading a book - instead, they'll be experiencing your story.
Author clients can request developmental edits, copyedits, proofreads, or a more in-depth ghost edit for their manuscripts. Editors are paired with projects based on their fields and genres of expertise. For both developmental and ghost edits, there is an additional phone conversation between the author and editor to discuss the proposed changes, and for answering any questions the author might have. Projects are completed on a deadline.
Bi-annual writer seminars and workshops in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Seminars have ranged in topics, including technical edits and continuity systems. Writers are encouraged to bring their current WIP to our workshops where we brainstorm solutions to various narrative and character roadblocks.
