Overview

I’ve edited the work of award-winning writers, and I’ve coached other writers in workshops and on a one-to-one basis.

Empathy, I believe, is the key to successful editing and coaching. Sometimes it means channeling the writer’s inner voice – the one that he or she may have trouble sustaining.

I won’t promise to work with everyone – we’ll need to establish common ground about goals and practices – but I’ll gladly read and respond to an up-to-1,000-word sample of your work as an opening step.

I've been shortlisted for the 2016 Penny Dreadful Novella Prize and for the 2017 Percy French Poetry Prize. In the Portfolio section below, I edited and designed Trilogy, the autobiography of Anthony O'Malley Daly. I contributed short pieces to Gleanings and to The Quiet Quarter Anthology. Other short stories and memoir pieces are posted on my website.

Work experience

Writer, Editor, Writing Coach

Tom Sigafoos
January, 2008 – Present (almost 11 years)

I concentrate on creative writing, and on coaching others who are developing their writing skills. My favourite author is Raymond Chandler, but others I read and admire include Barbara Kingsolver, John Updike, William Styron, Annie Dillard and Jonathan Raban.

Director, Education Consortium

SDRC
July, 1980 – December, 2001 (over 21 years)

Developed marketing and communications materials for an engineering software firm. Organised and managed an international university-relations program.

In my business career, I wrote advertising, marketing and public-relations material, plus user-friendly technical manuals. I also edited more business correspondence than I care to remember; MBA's may be able to attract venture capital, but they can't spell.

Hello, My Lovely: Scenes from the Marriage of Raymond and Cissy Chandler

Tom Sigafoos

Hello, My Lovely evokes the extraordinary marriage of Raymond and Cissy Chandler. Twice-divorced and eighteen years older than her husband, Cissy survived his drinking and betrayals to help him create an enduring myth – the tough, unrewarded man of integrity who lives on the mean streets of America. When Cissy died, Chandler wrote that “She was the beat of my heart for thirty years. She was th... read more

Code Blue: A Frank Chandler Mystery

Tom Sigafoos

Frank Chandler didn’t like the people who’d hired him, or the job that they wanted him to do. The smutty poison-pen letters looked like penny-ante harassment of the doctors and executives in a country-club hospital, and they probably deserved it. But something in the letters – or about them – led a nice kid to commit suicide, and attracted the interest of a hot-shot enforcer who had no busines... read more
