Thalia Sutton - Editor

Des Moines, IA

Editor of Fantasy; smooth-editor of works translated into English, especially novels and comics; writing tutor.

Overview

Hello! Glad to have you here. I do content editing and line editing for novels, particularly fantasy and its sub-genres. I also spot-check and rewrite novels translated from Japanese into English (what's known as smooth editing), and proofread for comic books. Lastly, I offer tutoring services along with my editing for self-publishing authors and author hopefuls. See below to learn more about my different skill sets.

Translation Editor (Japanese into English)--

I work with fiction novels in-translation (Japanese to English) with Yen Press's "Yen On" imprint. I handle the smooth editing on translations of best-selling sci-fi author Reki Kawahara ("Sword Art Online", "Accel World"), award-winning humorist Satoshi Wagahara ("The Devil is a Part-Timer"), lauded horror writer Yukito Ayatsuji ("Another"), among others.

My perspective on editing translations is this: "make something memorable."

The end translation should be easily understandable by its intended audience, as accurate as possible to the original, and yet still flow well with all the flavor that made the original special. After all, the difference between a good translation and great one is taking the translation from "good enough" to "something worth remembering." That's what I do: I specialize in recreating the linguistic artistry of the original language, a task informed by my background in fiction writing and Japanese study.

The aforementioned edits are done without the author or translator present, because I know Japanese. It should be noted that I can also edit translations from other languages without knowing the language, though a higher degree of accuracy will be achieved if the original author or translator is available to go back and forth with me.

Original English Language Works --

I'm an editor of Fantasy and graphic novels, with experience in Women's Fiction and Romance as well. I have a background in literature from the University of Iowa and Columbia University, and experience at several publishing houses in New York as well, including Random House and Hachette.

My belief is that everyone has a story to tell and as an editor, it's my job to help you tell it better--or keep it good if it's already there. I also take a teacher's approach to author handling, so that means no crying at the keyboard, but a sense that we're a team for your work.

So, I offer a variety of services, of which you can pick and choose:
1. Teaching skills and exercises to learn better writing via your own work;
2. Content Editing, in which I make recommendations to bring out the potential of a work's elements, such as plot, character, theme, and setting;
3. Line editing (and simultaneous proofreading), to tighten up a work that's passed the content editing stage, with the goal of making it shed its excess words and have the remaining pack a powerful punch;
4. Assessments to tell you what you need of the above;
5. And helping existing clients write cover letters to agents (or marketing copy if they're self-publishing).

In general, I'm all about professional respect and getting the audience great books. I've got enthusiasm for anything that gets your heart racing in the fantasy/mythology genre (and its subcategories), be that adventure, mystery, thrills, or erotic chills.

If you think any of the above is the jam for your toast, drop me a line!

English as a Second Language Works (originally written in English)--

I work with English as a second language authors as well.

I have experience:
1. Developing fiction by ESL writers or those who are less comfortable with English as they would like,
2. Rewriting, line-editing, and proofreading translations into English (both fiction and academic)--what is otherwise known as "smooth editing".

I am happy to take on either for you or your company, so that your finished piece of writing is easy to understand and is of an appropriate level to your intended audience.

Graphic Novels/Comics

Through Kodansha Comics and Yen Press, I also have experience editing manga scripts and proofreading comic galleys, and which I would be happy to do for you (be they manga style or not).

Work experience

Editor, Women's Fiction

Penner Press

August, 2014 – Present (over 2 years)

Content and line-edit women's fiction novels, including romance, for adult audiences. Specializing in small town/rural, historical, paranormal, mystery, and thriller. Read through submissions and make recommendation to publisher.

Graphic Novel Proofreader

Yen Press

June, 2014 – Present (over 2 years)

Proofread manga (graphic novel) galleys of 200 pages with one-week turnaround time (it only takes a day, though), checking for spelling errors/consistency, style errors, placement errors, flagging issues for editorial, as well as occasionally offering revised wordings. For art, checking cleaning/redraw to in-house standard.

Translation Editor and Rewriter, Japanese Light Novels

Yen Press

February, 2014 – Present (almost 3 years)

Read novels in Japanese, then read translation for accuracy. Edit translated text (in English) to create consistent tone, mood, and voice; as well as general line-editing for readability and better strength of text; rewriting translations as necessary to more closely align with intent of original work. Occasional localization of jokes and wordplay so that the humor reads smooth. In particular in this role, I try to keep a special eye out for keeping the poetry and flow of the original Japanese.

Freelance Editor, Fantasy & Sci Fi

T. Sutton Editorial Services

February, 2012 – Present (almost 5 years)

Provide content and line editing, proof-reading, and tutoring to author hopefuls and self-publishing authors, particularly in the fantasy and sci-fi genres. Work here has tended to lean towards middle grade and young adult, especially action/adventure.

The tutoring part is a side service offered for adult writers who have lots of stories to tell, but not necessarily the skill. It's been quite a lot of fun to see my learners progress, and I try to work with their life backgrounds, learning styles, and current level to craft mini-lessons that will help them improve now and into the future the more they write.

My theory is that writing is a bit like Photoshop: it involves layers, but each person comes with different layers already in place.
