I'm a meticulous editor who has worked on everything from college textboks to Navy SEAL romances during my long career. I am also a published author of historical romance. I find that my experience as a writer greatly helps me as I work with other writers who are undergoing the stressful process of creating and producing a viable book, sometimes for the first time.
After my second child was born in 1999, I took a break from editing and revived my writing career. I then restarted my freelance business as a developmental editor, copy editor, proofreader, and website designer (working mostly in WordPress and creating sites for many indie authors). My editing projects have switched over the years from more non-fiction to predominantly fiction. I work with many indie authors on genre novels, including contemporary and historical romance, romantic adventure, and mystery.
I opened my own company as a "book packager," the term for an out-of-house (meaning, not in-house at a publisher) book producer. I took raw manuscripts and returned a published, typeset book, farming out many of the stages of production. The various stages that I oversaw or executed were copy editing, communicating with authors, book markup for typesetting, proofreading, and indexing. I handled a lot of textbooks, business books, and self-help books.
After taking a work hiatus to obtain a master's degree in English literature from the University of Virginia, I moved to New England and became the editor of Samuel Weiser, Inc. and its imprint, Nicholas-Hays. I put 32 books on press in one year. This company publised esoteric book topics, from astrology to psychology to witchcraft.
Fresh out of college, I started as a researcher, then became a lead researcher. As we wrote the short pieces of Time-Life Books, naturally, we had to edit them as well. Great training ground.
