Sue Ford – Editor

Freelance editor. Writing instructor. Children's and adult's magazine and book writer.

Overview

I love mentoring other writers and do so through freelance editing and critiquing. I've been an instructor at the Institute of Children's Literature since 2009, and teach both a basic and advanced magazine writing course. In addition, I periodically do professional critiques through the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Oregon region--especially for picture books or magazine pieces. I have over twenty years of experience critiquing picture books, middle grade, and young adult novels.

I'm an author myself. I write for children under my maiden name, Susan Uhlig, and for adults as SM Ford. I have written fiction and nonfiction for a diverse range of magazines for children and adults, selling more than 160 pieces.
My most recent children’s books were ebooks published in 2015 with Schoolwide. Work-for-hire projects include three picture books for Unibooks (Korea) for their English as a foreign language program (2012-2013) and seven digital readers for Compass Media (Korea) in 2013. My adult book was published by Clean Reads in 2016.

I blog about writing and editing on two websites as well.

Work experience

Institute for Children's Literarture

May, 2009 — Present

I teach both basic and advanced magazine writing courses through the Institute correspondence courses.

Self-employed

Jul, 2008 — Present

I've done freelance editing for over ten years. I'm good at big picture (plot, structure, content, etc.) and line-by-line editing. My favorite way to work is directly on a manuscript, making comments and suggestions, accompanied by an editorial letter. I often include references for further reading for my clients.

Self-employed

Jan, 1990 — Present

When I was a child, I dreamed about being an “author.” But it wasn’t until my own children were in grade school that I began writing seriously. I sold my first magazine short story to Jack and Jill in 1992. Since then I’ve sold fiction and nonfiction to many magazines including Highlights for Children, Cricket, Ladybug, Soccer Jr., Real People, Guide, Encounter, Touch, and a variety of other religious magazines.

My first picture book Things Little Kids Need to Know (was selected as a 2000 Read, America! Collection Selection. Now I’ve done three more picture books, seven readers, two books for an educational subscription program with Schoolwide, and an adult novel.
