I'm an editor with four years' experience at a small press, publishing literary and genre fiction, short story collections, and poetry collections and anthologies.
I'm especially excited about - and have additional expertise in editing - experimental prose and poetry, genre-transgressive work, and genre fiction (particularly urban fantasy and science fiction). Nothing's too weird for me; I grew up on the 90s internet and experimental poetry of questionable merit.
In the past, I've worked on Victor Ocampo's The Infinite Library (sci-fi short stories, International Rubery Book Award shortlist), Madeleine Thien's Simple Recipes (short story, author shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker for a different title), and Wesley Leon Aroozoo's I Want To Go Home (biography/memoir). I also edited and wrote the foreword for Alvin Pang's What Happened (collected poems, and Alvin's poetry is in the Oxford Companion to Modern Poetry in English, 2nd Ed!). I'm certainly not claiming that all these books and authors are acclaimed because of my editing, but I'd like to think I helped a little.
My approach to editing begins with acknowledging that everyone needs a fresh eye on their writing, however accomplished and great the work. Eliot's Waste Land would be forgettable without Ezra Pound's aggressive red pen. I am committed to an editing process that is as gentle or as frank as the work requires at its current stage of development. I don't condescend to authors, I don't sugarcoat, but I don't believe in cruelty or harshness or canceling entire pages out with red pen.
I offer copyediting, proofreading, and developmental editing services. Where the work falls within the realm of my specific interests, I can also offer more involved industry- or genre-specific edits. I also have extensive experience with, and workflows for, working remotely and feedback-tracking that will provide a solid structure for working on your manuscript. I'm always willing to discuss, negotiate and explain quoted rates, and will try my best to work within your budget!
