Ray Robinson

Ray Robinson – Editor

I'm a literary mentor and editor who loves storytelling in all of its forms. I'm also a multi-award-winning novelist and screenwriter.

Overview

My debut novel, Electricity, was shortlisted for both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award. The screen adaptation premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2014 and won Best Screenplay at the National Film Awards. My other novels are The Man Without, Forgetting Zoë, and Jawbone Lake. Forgetting Zoë was a winner of the inaugural Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize. Most recently I wrote the BAFTA-longlisted, Edith, starring Peter Mullan and Michelle Fairley, upon which my new novel, The Mating Habits of Stags, is based.

It is my privilege to work with talented and aspiring writers to create amazing stories, and I'd like to help you write yours! If you have any questions, please feel free to email me. I'm a very hands-on writer and editor, and I'm happy for you to be in touch throughout the process. Happy writing!

Work experience

The Literary Consultancy

Mar, 2007 — Present

I am currently a Literary Mentor and Reader for The Literary Consultancy's mentoring scheme, offering one-to-one support, advice and direction to emerging writers. My assessments provide practical guidelines for self-editing, and give developmental and structural advice about basic narrative elements, showing students what they’re doing well, what’s working less well and why, and how to get their manuscript in the best possible shape. I offer assessment for: Fiction; Poetry; Short stories (individual and collections); and Scripts and Screenplays (theatre; film; TV; radio).
