I began my editorial career as one of the managing editors of a peer-reviewed postgraduate journal for the Arts, called Philament. I've since moved on to children's publishing, where I have been for nearing 5 years. I was Children's Editor at Scholastic Press and Omnibus Books for over four years, before moving over recently to Allen & Unwin, one of Australia's leading independent trade publishers. I specialise in manuscript assessment, structural editing, development editing and copy-editing picture books, junior fiction, middle-grade fiction (ages 10-14) and young adult fiction.
Everything we write has meaning to us, but publishing is a tough business. It's hard to step back from our own writing to decide whether it's ready to share with the world, so it's important to let someone with industry experience and knowledge of current trends to help you assess your work and present it with your best foot forward.
Books need a beginning, middle and an end. The end could be in the beginning. the beginning could be at the end, but whatever combination of the three parts, I can help you map the ins and outs of your writing to showcase it as the best it can possibly be.
A story always needs to go somewhere and a reader needs to care where it's going. A good story needs a strong narrative arc, character development and identifiable themes to keep those pages turning.
