Rachel Shipp

Rachel Shipp – Editor

Experienced developmental, line and copy editor for most fiction genres.

Overview

I am a reader first and foremost. Ever since childhood, I’ve loved immersing myself in different worlds and taking on new personas. When I’m editing a manuscript, I’m guided by this reader experience. I want your readers to love your story as much as you do. I want them to feel what your characters feel, to know what your characters know. And I want to make sure they have the experience you want them to have, which means preserving your voice through every stage of the editing process.

I offer manuscript evaluations, developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting for most fiction genres. While I read many genres, most of my work has been in romance and fantasy. I’m actively seeking psychological thrillers at this point—whenever I read one, I find myself feeling jealous of the editor who was lucky enough to work on it.

With both line editing and copyediting, my service includes two complete passes of your manuscript. You will have an opportunity to review changes after the first pass to make sure I’m meeting your expectations. Developmental editing and manuscript evaluations are tailored to each manuscript. I look for character development, plot, structure, anything that can detract from the story, and create a report detailing the problem as well as possible solutions. Developmental editing also includes detailed notes in your manuscript itself.

I believe editing is a collaborative process at every stage. An author writes a sentence, I make a suggestion about how to improve the sentence, and the author chooses whether my suggestion helps or hinders the message they’re trying to convey. I’ve worked with authors of all types and experiences, and I want to meet you wherever you are on your publishing journey.
