Overview

I'm a professional editor and digital marketer, wrangling words and pixels for clients in the UK and worldwide. I’ll polish your memoir, novel, short story, website or marketing collateral until it gleams. Think of me as the covert weapon in your communication arsenal. I’ll make sure your words are fully primed for their mission, whether that’s entertaining, informing or selling. Quality always matters.

What's my story? Take a quick look at my portfolio to see some of the published books and websites I’ve edited, and a few of the artists I’ve supported with content, web development and digital marketing strategy.

Training? Qualifications? Yes, I’ve studied, so I understand the theory, not just the practice. I trained with the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, and I’m a paid-up intermediate member which means I work to industry-recognised editorial standards. I have a BA (Hons) Literature (first-class), a Diploma in Marketing Communications and a Diploma in Literature and Creative Writing.

In my spare time, I’m a volunteer ESOL teacher, helping students unravel the many idiosyncrasies of the English language. Let's discuss cats another time ...

Work experience

Digital Marketing Consultant & Editor

Self-employed
August, 2016 – Present (about 2 years)

Professional editing and digital marketing services for independent authors, small businesses and creative sector clients.

Copy-editor & Proofreader

Strata Books
July, 2012 – August, 2016 (about 4 years)

Strata publishes books written by musicians. Its catalogue includes trade fiction, memoirs and children's books. It also publishes the online series 'Debut', which is a series of short memoirs written by musicians about the making of their debut album.

“Polly proofread and copy-edited two of my novels. On both occasions, she did an excellent job. Not only was she extremely detailed and conscientious, she never lost sight of the tone and energy of the work. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to any writer looking for someone to give their work a forensic going over - not only in regards to grammar and style but also logic and facts.

Her ability to make creative suggestions is another skill she possesses. Never prescriptive, and always in tune with the writer’s needs, her input is always valuable, and more often than not, results in the novel being hugely improved."

— Simon Fellowes (author 'Don't Breathe the Air' and 'My Name is Ferdinand!')

“You caught a lot more than I’d hoped. In addition, as a once-upon-a-time journalist, anytime I see changes for the purposes of clarity or brevity, which was quite a few times here, I find myself strangely gratified... So thanks!”

— Stuart Bisson-Foster
co-writer You Can Drum But You Can't Hide

Senior Communication & New Media Roles

VARIOUS
August, 1999 – June, 2012 (almost 13 years)

I spent over a decade in London working in public and private sector senior communicator roles, including head of communications for an NHS organisation and managing director of the new media division of Sanctuary Group PLC, a global music and entertainment company. (I'm recovering nicely, thank you!)
