Margot Lester

Margot Lester – Editor

Writing coach, dev editor, line editor specializing in nonfiction

Overview

I'm an award-winning journalist and author, specializing in nonfiction. Let me help you with development editing, line editing and author coaching.

My prior projects include development editing a multi-award-winning YA reference book, Be a Better Writer; and line-editing a business book, The Institute Way, written by the team at the Balanced Scorecard Institute. I've also authored and co-authored books, including two in the critically acclaimed Real Life Guide series.

I take a strengths-based approach to editing and coaching, a concept codified by Dr. Dennis Saleebey of the University of Kansas. This perspective builds on a foundation of our talents, competence and ability to learn. Though it originated in social work, it is an excellent fit for nurturing better writers because even writing for work is personal, and in some cases, intimidating. Getting feedback is uncomfortable enough without creating a punitive, anxiety-inducing and shame-based environment for improvement.

My assessment methodology combines the 6 Traits of Good Writing, created by the Northwest Writing Lab (now Education Northwest), writing strategies based on my collaboration with Steve Peha of Teaching That Makes Sense, Inc., and tips and tactics developed over 40 years of working in newsrooms, classrooms and organizational communications.
The 6 Traits take the guesswork out of defining, assessing and improving quality.

Let's work together!
