An editorial designer and art director specialising in cookery and lifestyle, I have experience managing the book design process right from the early stages of meeting the author and putting together a creative brief/ team, through art directing the photoshoot, to designing and laying out the content and getting it ready for print. I especially love the creative briefing part of a book as I think this forms a strong, collaborative foundation.
I have worked on a variety of different projects, including designing and art directing Amelia Freer's 'Eat Nourish Glow' and Dr Rupy Aujla's 'The Doctor's Kitchen', both of which have become bestsellers. Health and wellness is a personal area of interest of mine, and so I also particularly enjoyed working on Annie Clarke's 'Mind Body Bowl', where I art directed yoga and mindfulness poses along-side recipes; and Laurey Simmons' 'The Inner Beauty Bible', for which I organised a lifestyle photoshoot. It was great too to work on Elly Pear's cookery books - 'Fast Days and Feast days' and 'Let's Eat!' - for which the brief (like the recipes themselves) was creative, vibrant and fun.
I also designed Holly Willoughby's 'Truly Happy Baby', which involved a two day photoshoot of 2 week-12 month aged babies - and May Martin's (of 'The great British Sewing Bee' fame) 'Sewing Bible', for which we photographed a mixture of lifestyle, craft, and fashion.
In addition to managing these larger projects, I have designed a number of gift books for which I'll source and commission images; including 'Lagom' illustrated by Petra Borner, 'Japonisme' illustrated by Ryo Takemasa; and 'Kindness - the Little Thing that Matters Most', illustrated by Debbie Powell.
I recently designed the logo for 'Thorsons' - a relaunched alternative-lifestyle and psychology imprint of HarperCollins - with which we then released a series of gold-foiled 'Thorsons Classics' covering iconic titles such as 'Jonathon Livingston Seagull', 'Men are from Mars' and 'Light on Yoga'.
I approach each project as a new 'brand' with a whole new look and feel, to be presented through a whole new visual language - though, however different the books I work on or admire are, I am passionate overall about stylish, simple design solutions and clean, stand-out typography.
I’m a designer and art director with 7 years of experience across illustrated non-Fiction titles. I specialise in cookery, lifestyle/ wellness, interiors and gift books. I particularly enjoy the creative briefing process as I think it's an important collaborative stage in a project; and I like moving between the different paces and perspectives of both cover and layout design. Where appropriate I'll bring my own infographics, illustration and lettering into a project.
A few months into my employment as Designer, I was promoted to Senior Designer for non-Fiction at HarperCollins.
During my years in this role I gained experience in design and art direction across a number of genres including cookery, craft, lifestyle and wellness. I became confident meeting authors, putting together concept moodboards and creative teams, and designing stand-out books; and I gained valuable experience presenting to and collaborating with editorial, marketing and sales during the process.
In addition to managing large non-Fiction titles, I re-branded Thorsons (an imprint of HarperCollins); illustrated a number of cookery books; and designed several smaller gift books for which I commissioned images and illustration. I also continued to work on marketing for my titles; designing tote bags, mugs, banners for twitter or facebook, and gifs for Instagram.
After working mainly on marketing material, I was employed by the non-Fiction design team to get more involved in cookery, gifting and lifestyle genres. During this time I helped with creative briefs and attended shoots, working closely with my art director to familiarise myself with the process of putting books, and creative teams together.
I was brought in to the HarperCollins design department as a freelancer to work across marketing for both Fiction and non-Fiction. During this time, among other things, I designed and artworked numerous promotional posters to go up around the country; put together creative pitches for a variety of books we went on to win including 'I, Partridge, we need to talk about Alan' by Steve Coogan; worked on The Harper Insider, an oversized newspaper catalogue for booksellers; and artworked Jermain Jackson's 'Michael, through a brother's eyes', formatted as a special edition French-fold.
