Kevin Knight

Kevin Knight - Designer

Brighton

I have a passion for books and all things visual.

Overview

For over 30 years I have been designing for print and half that time has been spent making beautiful illustrated books. Although I have been specialising in designing children’s books for the last five years - covers and book interiors - I still design a variety of adult reference books. Lately my work has increasingly come from the indie side of publishing, especially covers for Kindle books.

Work experience

Freelance book designer

Kevin Knight

July, 2013 – Present (over 3 years)

I design book interiors and covers for a variety of publishers and book packagers since going freelance in July 2013. These include: Lonely Planet, Quarto, Rotovision, Quid Publishing, Salariya Book Company, Ivy Press, White Thompson Publishing, and Paper Wasp.

Design manager

Ivy Press

September, 2011 – June, 2013 (over 1 year)

Rejoined Ivy Press looking after the art direction of their contract department (clients included Parragon and Anness Publishing) and developed the new children’s list, Ivy Kids. For the 2012 catalogue we had 20 titles - all from a standing start! Left in June 2013 when the company restructured.

Design manager

Tony Potter Publishing

June, 2008 – September, 2010 (over 2 years)

Designing highly illustrated children’s books full time. Mainly historical pop-ups but also developed a children’s list of paperback books. Lots of experience in different production techniques. Unfortunately company went bust in recession.

Freelance book designer

Kevin Knight

January, 2000 – April, 2008 (about 8 years)

I launched into the new millennium as a freelance as I wanted to be closer to the design process rather than managing people. I developed an interest in designing children’s books.

Senior designer

Bridgewater Books

February, 1995 – December, 1999 (almost 5 years)

My first job in publishing - my background was in corporate design - was with UK based book packager Bridgewater Books where I joined as a senior designer. This developed into an art manager’s role - commissioning photography, freelancing out presentation material for book fairs, etc, as well as a ton of hands-on designing for major UK publishers such as DK.
