Kevin Knight

Kevin Knight - Designer

Brighton

I love designing books - covers and interiors - and delivering designs to a budget and on schedule.

Overview

I have over 20 years of experience designing illustrated books for children and adults.

In the last few years a significant proportion of my work has come from sources other than publishers and I have designed a number of covers for Kindle. I particularly enjoy creating covers that communicate the character of the book in type and image and stand out from everything else on the market.

Work experience

Freelance book designer

Kevin Knight is self-employed

July, 2013 – Present (over 3 years)

I design book interiors and covers for a variety of UK-based publishers, including Lonely Planet, Quarto, Wayland and Kew Publishing. I also manage my mother’s fiction books which cover over 40 years of writing. There are around 20 titles, some long out of print, which have been given a new life on Kindle with covers I have designed and illustrated.

Design manager

Ivy Press

September, 2011 – June, 2013 (over 1 year)

Rejoined Ivy Press and developed their new childrens’ list, Ivy Kids. For the 2012 catalogue we had 20 titles - all from a standing start! Left in June 2013 when the company restructured.

Design manager

Tony Potter Publishing

June, 2008 – September, 2010 (over 2 years)

Designing highly illustrated childrens’ books full time at Tony Potter Publishing and developed a childrens’ paperback books list. Lots of experience in different production techniques. When the company went bust in the recession I returned to freelance book designing.

Freelance book designer

Kevin Knight

January, 2000 – April, 2008 (about 8 years)

I launched into the new millennium as a freelance book designer as I wanted to be closer to the design process rather than managing people. I developed an interest in designing children’s books.

Senior designer

Bridgewater Books

February, 1995 – December, 1999 (almost 5 years)

My first job in publishing - my background was in corporate design - was with UK based Bridgewater Books where I joined as a senior designer. This developed into an art manager’s role of commissioning photography, freelancing out presentation material for book fairs, etc, as well as a ton of hands-on designing for major UK publishers such as Dorling Kindersley.

Among the characters lost, or who by a stroke of fate missed the train, were those whose lives were changed for ever. In this cross section of Victorian society, from the wealthy Clara Tho... read more
