Katie Eelman - Editor

Boston, MA, United States

Developmental editor, project manager, and freelance publicist with nearly a decade in corporate & independent publishing.

Overview

To this day, the milestone I am proudest of is being the youngest person in my hometown county to have her own library card. I had to stand on a chair to reach the circulation desk to sign the back of it. Since then, I am incredibly proud of the amazing fiction and non-fiction authors for whom I have worked as an editor and advocate. I am an insatiable reader and a diligent book editor, with extensive experience in book marketing, publicity, and events planning. I am passionate about championing independent authors and their work, and I revel in the opportunity to refine a manuscript and shepherd the book to publication. One unique challenge in the publishing world can be ensuring that your book finds the editor who understands your voice, your story, and your aim. I work with you to create a book that you love and that has wide selling appeal.

Work experience

Co-founder, Editor-in-Chief

Cutlass Press
November, 2016 – Present (over 1 year)

Cutlass Press, the publishing imprint of Boston-based independent bookstore Papercuts J.P., finds and publishes unique, subversive, and entertaining literature.

I founded the press in 2016 with the store's owner. I am solely responsible for acquisitions, the editorial process, project management, publicity, marketing, and sales of all titles. I am passionate about being a shepherd and advocate for authors and their books, and ensuring that wonderful work is seen in a market that is saturated and a world that is distracted.

My press was named a Game Changer of 2017 by the Boston Globe. Read more about our work at the Guardian, the Boston Globe, Improper Bostonian, LitReactor, and Huffington Post.

Associate Producer

The Sex Myth

Based on the acclaimed 2015 nonfiction book of the same name, The Sex Myth: A Devised Play is a modern, mixed-gender, diverse, and inclusive new-generation show based on the true stories of its performers about sex and sexuality, coming to the historic HERE Arts Center in NYC this summer. As Associate Producer, I schedule, edit, and publish content, maintain social media and web presence, spearhead marketing efforts, and partner with journalists and media contacts for stories and coverage of the show and the associated movement.

Director, Events & Media

Papercuts J.P.
November, 2014 – Present (over 3 years)

As the director of events and media of a small, independent bookstore in the Boston area, I have a curated a high-quality literary event series of local and national authors, produced a literary podcast with thousands of listeners, and directed media attention to the important work of our store and of independent bookstores in general.

Non-fiction Reader

Post Road Magazine
December, 2013 – December, 2016 (about 3 years)

Post Road is an innovative, award-winning literary magazine publishing the best visual art, fiction, poetry, and essays. As a non-fiction reader, I volunteer my time to reading essay submissions and assisting in curating the non-fiction section of the esteemed literary magazine.

Managing Editorial Intern

Little, Brown & Co.
May, 2012 – September, 2012 (4 months)

As the managing editorial intern for the esteemed Little, Brown & Co. imprint of Hachette Book Group, I assisted in managing large-scale publishing projects. I routed book jackets between art and production, maintained, managed e-book projects, and transmitted manuscripts for paperback release.
