Kate Short

Kate Short – Editor

Non-fiction copy-editor and proofreader with in-house publishing experience, specialising in social sciences, humanities and education

Overview

Hi. My name is Kate, and I have been working with words for most of my adult life.

I am a copy-editor, proofreader and editorial project manager with 15+ years' experience working on educational books, academic journals and digital products. My background is in psychology, linguistics and education, but I have turned my hand to a wide variety of subjects over the years, including child development, geography, history, religious studies, sport studies and sustainable development. My in-house experience has provided me with a firm understanding of the processes and decisions behind bringing a product to press, and the potential challenges along the way. This has informed the way I work with my clients.

During a copy-edit, I focus on the technical aspects of your writing, checking grammar, punctuation and spelling (of course!), but also assessing clarity, flow and consistency of style.

A proofread, on the other hand, is the final quality check, where I would look to catch any essential grammar, punctuation and spelling errors, as well as check for any formatting issues.

If you are unsure which level of service you require, I would be happy to discuss this with you. On every project, I value the importance of collaboration with you, the author, the subject expert.

As a Professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP, formerly SfEP), you can rest assured that I have met the standards and expertise required to provide a quality service. I have also completed editorial training with the CIEP, the Publishing Training Centre (PTC) and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA).
