Karen Holmes

Karen Holmes – Editor

Experienced, sympathetic editor for fiction and non-fiction.

Overview

Writer, editor, proofreader, publishers' reader, mentor - with thirty years in the industry, I've turned my hand to most things. I'm reliable, never miss a deadline, reasonably priced and, above all, easy to work with. As a writer, I've survived by being willing to turn my hand to anything where words are needed. Learning materials (including MBA courses), journalism, marketing copy, the chairman's speech when he was too busy to write it himself... I'm also a published novelist, non-fiction and short-story writer, so am familiar with the stresses and strains of being an author. That probably explains why my authors stick me. I live in south-west France but work with an international clientele.

Copy editing and proofreading, occasionally reviewing manuscripts and assessing their suitability for publication.

Self-employed

Apr, 2010 — Present

I've worked with 2QT for a number of years as an editorial consultant. I assess manuscripts to see if they are suitable for publishing, work with authors to develop their work, edit at all levels and occasionally proofread. Other tasks include writing blurbs and advising authors on marketing their books.

Self-employed

Feb, 2004 — Present

I've been writing distant learning materials for ICS for more than fifteen years. Subjects include management training (Level 1 to Level 4), creative writing and GCSE and A level courses. I also review, edit and proofread other writers' materials.

Self-employed

Feb, 1992 — Present

Adapting fiction and movie scripts into graded readers for English language students. Every adaptation must meet stringent grammatical and structural standards so this is detailed, technical work as well as demanding a creative input to keep the tone of the the original work. Two of my adaptations have won the English Reading Foundation international awards for my category and two have been runners-up. I have about twenty-five adaptations in print.

Self-employed

Jan, 1990 — Present

I have a stable of regular fiction and non-fiction authors with whom I work at all levels, from concept development through to copy editing and proofing.
