Phil Jourdan

Phil Jourdan - Editor

London, United Kingdom

I've edited NYT bestselling authors, award-winners, popular mid-listers and complete beginners, and they are all the best.

Overview

Good morning!

By day I edit science fiction and fantasy novels for the fantastic Nottingham-based Angry Robot. By night I am also an ordained Zen Buddhist priest, philosophy buff and musician. I was one of the founders of the creative writing website and magazine, LitReactor, and the original managing editor at the counterculture and politics press, Repeater.

So my range of interests is pretty broad! Whether you're writing about alien invasions, obscure existentialists or the modern applications of ancient contemplative disciplines, I may be able to help.

I offer services in Developmental Editing and Editorial Assessment.

In most cases, I recommend going for the Editorial Assessment. I will read your book carefully and send you some pretty extensive general feedback, between 3,000 and 5,000 words. I will be honest and always encouraging. You can then refer to my feedback as you go back to working on your book. Getting this kind of general editorial attention can be very stimulating for authors, and may be just the kick in the pants you need to take your book quite a bit further.

If what you want is really thorough and ongoing feedback, then go for the Developmental Editing option. This involves regular Skype calls and written feedback. It's also a rather more expensive option and will require a real commitment from both of us. I want to do a good job and I want you to be happy, and that means we may end up working together for several months. We'll talk for an hour or two at a time on Skype, typically on weekends. I will annotate your text where necessary. Contact me and we'll see if we can work out a productive way to collaborate.

Since I work as a full-time editor, I can only work on your book in the evenings and on weekends. Please keep that in mind if you want a very quick turn-around, because you may not get it from me. But I promise to be thorough and reliable. (And remember — if we work together, no matter how good your book is, I can't bring it to acquisitions at my company or anything like that. We can't publish it. It's up to you to find an agent and a book deal once the book is perfect!)
