I write under several pen names in order to keep the two ends of the business separate. I started out in life as a behavioral therapist and wrote for my own enjoyment. But cancer had other ideas. This would normally be where I attempt to make a cheerful introduction of myself, but when you've got a stack of rejections taller than you are the best that can be mustered on a good day is cynicism. I'm a Luddite, born too late, the very date Neuromancer was released, and am trying to make my own wave because I can't go back and catch the one I feel I was meant for.
I began interning as an editor for several local newspapers down on the Treasure Coast in 2002, and enjoyed a life of sand and rum until print died. Before they rolled up their mats I had made it to line editor in two simultaneous positions, and dabbled in fiction. In the course of eight years I managed upwards of thirty publications, comprising twenty magazines, five covers, one radio drama script, and a grand total of $104 in profits.
I have worked in the literary industry, made friends and enemies, have had my work published in upwards of two-dozen fiction periodicals (not fictional periodicals, mind), and found that I had a greater knack for looking at someone else's rough draft and telling them how to turn it into a supercharged hellbeast of a page-turner than I did for writing my own material. And that jibed with my view of the industry. Editors who decided what was being printed and what wasn't were overworked. Burned out. Jaded. They could no longer see that the seemingly mundane pieces of paper that crossed their desks every day contained the distilled hopes and dreams of normal, average people. These people could happily live out their lives of quiet desperation if only someone would share and glory in the vistas of the imagination bursting and shooting through their heads. And it wasn't happening.
And I feared that if I stayed I would become the same burnt out shell who could no longer see the beauty and magic that flourished all around.
So I freelance. I beta-read. I edit. I copyedit. And I keep both my clients and their readers happy because I see the wonders they see and believe in them just as fervently. Nothing would make me happier than seeing their stories broadcast to the world.
