Jim Aikin

Jim Aikin – Editor

Experienced author and editor specializing in developmental and copy-editing of novel-length fiction.

Overview

I'm an author with multiple credits in mainstream fiction and nonfiction. For 25+ years I was an editor, staff writer, and grammar/punctuation guru at the late lamented Keyboard Magazine, a monthly for musicians, where I gained an international reputation as an expert in synthesizers and related technology. I've edited nonfiction books on music technology for Backbeat Books (now a division of Hal Leonard Publishing) and Peachpit Press. On those books I provided a combination of developmental, technical, and line editing. My older novels, now out of print, were published by Del Rey and Ace, and my short fiction has appeared in F&SF, Asimov's, and other magazines. I'm currently embroiled in a self-publishing enterprise that will include a series of fantasy novels and most likely a story anthology and reprints of my older work; if you want to evaluate my own prose style, you can easily use the Look Inside on Amazon; all you have to do is spell "Aikin" correctly. Search engine results for "Aiken" will lead you far astray.

I'm available as a developmental or copy-editor for novel-length fiction. I'm selective about what projects I take on, because I'm also working on my own novel series. Although my experience in editing others' fiction is still somewhat limited, I can offer references. I can also work through a couple of opening chapters on spec, to give you an idea of how I work.

Work experience

Keyboard magazine

Dec, 1975 — Jun, 2002 (over 26 years)

In addition to staff writing and grammar/punctuation guru duties at Keyboard and the other music group magazines for many years, I have edited nonfiction books for Backbeat Books (now a division of Hal Leonard) and Peachpit Press. I'm offering my services as a fiction editor, however, so you might prefer to know that my first two novels were published (back in the 1980s) by Del Rey and Ace. I've sold short fiction to F&SF, Asimov's, and other magazines.
