Janna Morishima

Janna Morishima – Editor

Former Scholastic Graphix editor specializing in visual storytelling, especially graphic novels and picture books. Let's work together!

Overview

I've been working with graphic novelists and children's book creators since 2002. I was a co-founder of Scholastic's Graphic imprint and the director of Diamond Book Distributors' Kids Group. I helped launch Toon Books and the NYC Department of Education's NYC Reads 365 literacy initiative. I have worked with a wide range of authors and artists, from established best-sellers like Raina Telgemeier and Jeff Smith to emerging talent like Misako Rocks and Gregg Schigiel.

I have a wide-ranging career background, having worked in art, editorial, marketing, sales, and business development. Therefore, I take a holistic approach with authors and publishers, not just editing the manuscript but helping them see how it fits in the market and how its editorial development fits into the overall publishing strategy.

I can help with:
- early stage developmental editing for both self-publishing and traditional publishing
- developing proposals for agents and publishers
- critiquing query letters and pitch packages
- evaluating authors' and artists' portfolios and helping them choose which projects to focus on

If you're a visual storyteller with an illustrated children's book or graphic novel, I'm excited to hear more about your project!
