Overview

I’ve been a freelance editor since 1988, mostly in the area of language reference. I've been Editor or Senior Editor on many of the major dictionary, grammar and language reference projects of the last three decades, for publishers such as Oxford, Penguin, Macmillan, Cambridge, Chambers, Pearson and Bloomsbury. So I know where your commas should go and I can fix your misrelated participial clauses.

In recent years, I've also worked as a literary editor, particularly in the genres of humour and crime, working closely with authors in the areas of development, story structure, characterisation and tone, as well as undertaking a comprehensive edit of the manuscript text as it's written.

I enjoy a pleasingly informal but always professional relationship with authors and (when I'm not halfway up a Scottish hill with my wife) I spend long hours at my desk, which means I'm usually at the end of a phone if you need me.

I get as much pleasure from your five-star reviews as you do, even though I'm perfectly happy just to do my job then disappear into the shadows (and up a Scottish hill) while you sip champagne and smile for the cameras.
