Harriet Darling

Harriet Darling – Editor

Many years spent reading, editing and writing books. I'd love to help get your book ready for the world. I'm fast, accurate and inexpensive.

Overview

I have an author page which showcases my books and a weekly blog. As an editor, I do proofreading, line editing, and some content/style editing. I've written and published eight novellas (mostly fantasy) and two short-story collections, which can be purchased through Amazon.com. See further information below.

The genres I'm most familiar with are mystery, thriller and suspense stories. I'm also good with fantasy and science fiction, as well as non-fiction.

As a freelance editor, I:
. Researched VAR data; edited 14 custom home construction proposals & cost breakdowns; researched policing techniques for proposed nonfiction book; designed and processed consumer & customer satisfaction surveys; edited and revised legal contracts; wrote and/or edited articles for newsletters; edited textbooks, research reports, and travel articles, among other documents
· Prepared press releases and press kits, sales letters, abstracts and other marketing materials (brochures, pamphlets, flyers, letterhead and business cards)
· From 6/96 to 1/97, contracted with
Brandon-Hall.com
(online e-learning industry analyst) to edit 16 case studies, five executive summaries, three press releases and two ghosted articles (one for Forbes, one for publication in a book authored by Brandon Hall)
· Prepared resumes and cover letters for seven clients, coached three for job interviews
· Attended two-week course in San Diego for Real Estate Appraiser Trainee, passed US PAP exam for certificate, worked for five months as trainee with Schmidt-Prescott Real Estate Appraisals in Fremont
I'm generally a calm-natured person, with a slight tendency to get anxious when under pressure or frustrated. Mostly, though, I've been told I'm very easy to work with, and generally a very nice person.

Work experience

The Homesteader

Mar, 1999 — Jun, 2000 (over 1 year)

Purchased franchise for monthly free newspaper for new homeowners. Mostly, my job was to edit syndicated articles, and arrange for publication and distribution to around 2000 new home owners in the San Jose area. I published 11 monthly editions, to great response, but found I was losing money in the process so I had to quit.

InfoWorld

Apr, 1987 — Mar, 1996 (almost 9 years)

Main job was writing and processing high-tech surveys to subscribers (mostly senior IT people); I also processed requests for permission to quote from the newspaper, set up and oversaw reference library, hired and trained Street Pricing Researcher, and conducted technical research for staff and the public.
