Eva Avery

Eva Avery – Editor

I am an editor and writer, contributing to books at major publishing houses and collabrating on national and international bestsellers.

Overview

As a editor and writer I have had the opportunity to work with first time and long-time authors, contributing to the success of national and international bestselling campaigns.

I have worked closely on over 80 books for HarperCollins and Chronicle Books, collaborating as Assistant Editor on New York Times bestsellers including The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson, The Wild Unknown Collection by Kim Krans, the 642 things to Draw and Color series, and Wait, What? by Jim Ryan. I have edited both manuscripts and proposals, and helped develop books across self-help, humor, business, lifestyle, memoir, philosophy, social justice, health, and mind, body, spirit.

I have also collaborated on lead titles like Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leaves Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by award-winning editor of Maya Dusenbery; The Existentialist’s Survival Guide: How to Live Authentically in an Inauthentic Age by Gordon Marino, the director of the Hong Kierkegaard Library at St. Olaf College and boxing correspondent for The Wall Street Journal; There Is No Good Card for This: What To Say and Do When Life is Scary, Awful, and Unfair to People You Love by Emily McDowell and Dr. Kelsey Crowe; and comedian Chris Gethard’s forthcoming self-help narrative Lose Well.

I believe in the power of storytelling, strategic marketing, and targeted branding. I look forward to helping authors strengthen their voice, develop concepts, and position their book in the marketplace in a creative, unique, and successful way.

Work experience

Harpercollins Publishers

Feb, 2016 — Aug, 2018 (over 2 years)

Working with fast-paced editorial and production deadlines, I assisted with over 40 books per year, including New York Times bestsellers and international bestsellers. I edited and rewrote manuscripts, helping with conceptual and structural work, and line-by-line revisions.

Reading up to 20 proposals per week, I evaluated nonfiction titles for acquisition, and conducted competitive market research in order to position books successfully within the marketplace. I helped conceptualize cover designs and write product and retailer copy, including: book jacket, catalog description, marketing copy, publicity pitches, sales tools, and search engine optimized online copy for Amazon, HarperCollins, and Barnes & Noble.

Chronicle Books

Jul, 2015 — Jan, 2016 (6 months)

Working with the Art and Entertainment publishing group, I helped produce original books, games, guided journals, calendars, and gift items. I wrote copy for their national catalog, International Frankfurt Rights Guide, online copy, and products.

I contributed creative content and art for new titles, and edited 1st galleys. Researching competitive products, I helped assess submissions, develop marketing tip sheets, and write book proposals to acquire new projects. I created PowerPoint book launch campaigns and presentations for all front list products.
