Overview

I am an empathetic, supportive and flexible copy-editor and proofreader specialising in non fiction, particularly history, social sciences and biography/memoir. Having completed a PhD and published my own writing, I am aware of the stresses and pains of editing and am here to support you through the final stages of copy-edits and proofs.
I am able to work to tight deadlines and strict budgets according to briefs and house style sheets, and am also comfortable Anglicising/Americanizing texts.

Work experience

Copy-Editor and Proofreader

Self-employed
January, 2016 – Present (almost 2 years)

After several years working in higher education as a lecturer and then as a tutor teaching writing, I branched out on my own. I wanted to work with more than just academics at a single institution. Since then I have worked with academics, writers and businesses around the world—from Sri Lanka to Saudi Arabia to Australia—to support their writing and make it as clear and strong as it can be.

During this time I have also completed my own first book, published with Amsterdam University Press, and had a second popular history book accepted by Scott Pack at Unbound.

Academic Writing Tutor

UK University
April, 2012 – June, 2015 (about 3 years)

Here I worked with undergraduate and postgraduate students and professional researchers on writing of all lengths. Services ranged from initial planning and brainstorming to copy-editing to final proofreading.

I was regularly praised for my abilities and for my empathetic and supportive manner.

Graduate Lecturer

University of Birmingham
January, 2008 – March, 2014 (about 6 years)

During and after my PhD studies, I lectured in Ancient and Medieval History. It was while marking undergraduate essays that my interest in writing, and supporting writing, grew.
