Overview

After graduating with an honors degree in literature from New School University and a Masters degree in English from Fordham University, I pursued my PhD in English and began my path in academic publishing.

I have been working as an academic editor for seven years. I specialize in copyediting and proofreading monographs, edited collections, articles, dissertations, and theses. My experience in editing ranges from monographs published with Oxford University Press, Palgrave Macmillan, and Boydell & Brewer, to essays on literature, economics, history, and art, as well as dozens of articles and reviews published in Renaissance Quarterly, the premier American journal of Renaissance studies, where I am contracted as a long-term staff copyeditor.

My work style is meticulous, thoughtful, and responsive--I want your voice to be heard in your writing, and believe there's a real value in getting things exactly right. Your work deserves care, and I will provide you with whatever level of in-depth commentary, feedback, correction, and/or development that your writing needs.

I most commonly undertake copyediting, proofreading, and assistance with style and citations. I am particularly well versed in Chicago Manual of Style, MLA, and dissertation formatting for the humanities; I can quickly adapt to most house styles for various publishers.

Here are a few testimonials from writers I've worked with:

"Ellis's work has encompassed the full range of editing services: thematic positioning, sentence structure, word selection, and bibliographic verification of each citation. I have been very pleased with their editorial services and would recommend them to others."
- James Kelly, Senior Lecturer in Finance and Director of the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis

"I hired Ellis to copy edit and manage production details of a complex, multi-authored volume and their work exceeded my expectations! I have hired them again since. Their attention to detail, their professionalism, and initiative gave me confidence in the work. We collaborated well on solving some complex challenges of citation and style across the contributions of multiple authors: Ellis noticed things that I had not yet perceived and proposed great solutions. Timely, accurate, professional, and careful: they made my work look better."
- Anne Fernald, Professor of English and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

I'm looking forward to working with you!

Work experience

Editor

Self-employed
February, 2020 – Present (over 2 years)

River Road Editorial is an editorial agency in the Hudson Valley, just two hours of north of New York City. We work with writers to perfect their works, clarify their ideas, and shape their projects to diverse fields and markets. Most of all, we channel our passion for the written word to help authors realize the power of their writing. We can meet a project anywhere in the publication process, and provide services for copyediting, proofreading, developmental editing, and formatting of novels, essays, poetry, academic monographs, articles, edited collections, and online publications. My services focus on nonfiction works in the humanities and qualitative social sciences, including economics, film, literature, business, and history.
