The Zodiac Legion by David Catuhe is a graphic fantasy book. Based in Seattle, Northwest America, Catuhe proclaims himself to be a massive fan of magic and an avid player of the World of Warcraft game series. At the age of 45, Catuche decided to reignite his passion for art, specifically fantasy scenes and characters. Proclaiming in his author bio "it's never too late to follow your passions!", he presents fantasy fans with his debut publication, The Zodiac Legion.
Writing in the introduction, Catuhe explains the fantasy lore behind the twelve knights of the Zodiac Legion.
"These powerful warriors are a group of mortals chosen by the Gods to serve as their avatars. Each knight represents a zodiac sign, and is infused through their armor with the power of that sign."
The introduction is then followed by a double page spread dedicated to each figure of the zodiac legion, from Aries to Virgo, including their strengths, mythical history, an their relationships with other figures within the fictional world of Illuminaira. Opposite each zodiac figure is a full page portrait of each figure, capturing the core personality and power of the character. It is the same style of high-concept fantasy artwork which fills the latter third of the book. This chunky amount of space is dedicated to the extensive world-building of the said territory of Illuminaria, including maps and detailed landscape illustrations.
Although a short and snappy read at 56 pages with plenty of graphic visuals throughout, The Zodiac Legion is a beautifully crafted book. The level of illustration is so high, this reviewer even had to do some digging on whether the artwork was AI generated (and, for what it's worth, Catuhe does himself a massive disservice by not crediting himself as the author and illustrator). If nothing else, hopefully the author is able to see his talents have value and can use this title as a strong portfolio of work to pitch to publishers, should he wish to proceed down a different career path. The writing standard itself is good, and ties in with all expectations of the fantasy genre, setting up the Zodiac Legion perfectly for any subsequent books.
For anyone who enjoys fantasy, but struggles with the length and visualisation of most novels, The Zodiac Legion is the perfect book. Crafted with love and devotion to all things fantasy, it is incredibly hard to find fault with Catuhe's work. The only question that remains is when can we expect more? Five stars, through and through.
