Synopsis
It's at the very end of a long day where we find a little boy named Bean up in his room, happily at play. Time has flown by, the sun has set, and little Bean still has not slept. Then Mommy comes and announces to his grand surprise, "It's time for bed." But will Bean lie down and shut his eyes?
A little boy and his dog are winding down from the day and getting ready for bed in this charming picture book by R.L. Taylor.
Bean isn't exactly jumping for joy at the prospect of bedtime. Bean tells his mom he's hungry. Then he says he's thirsty. Bean knows Mom will eventually "Give me that last snack and a drink!" He also knows his plan is working. Well, he knows it's working until Mom reminds Bean that it's getting late.
With his drink downed and his snack finished, Bean has run out of staling tactics. So it's bedtime - even if Bean isn't tired. Wait. Will Mom read him a book? Mom agrees, under one condition: Bean must lie in bed and "quietly listen."
Mom commences to read as Bean glides into sleep with an "unspoken promise to see Mommy tomorrow, at the start of a brand new day."
Told in rhyme, this sweet, short story will be a hit with both parents and little ones who are looking for a quiet and gentle bedtime story to help wind down the day and get ready for sleep. Parents will recognize the bedtime stalling tactics Bean tries to deploy to avoid going to bed. Children will enjoy the tone, which is uplifting and warm. They will also enjoy the colorful illustrations. They're top-notch and will keep young readers engaged and turning pages until the very end. Speaking of illustrations, those in this book are expertly drawn and quite detailed. They include not only Bean, his dog, and his mom, but also family pictures on the wall, a colorful quilt on Bean's bed, and kitchen utensils hanging on the kitchen wall.
Fans of Margaret Wise Brown's bedtime classics Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny will find much to enjoy in When It's Time for Bed: Bean's Bedtime Story.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025I enjoyed the charming rhyme of this book as it captured the fun interactions between mom and son during the dreaded "it's time for bed battle"! By the time Bean got himself tired, I felt like I was ready to join him in dreamland. A fun book to read over and over to the little ones at bedtime.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2025I love this book! I have a granddaughter and this is a good book to read to her specifically because, my granddaughter always wants to eat something when you tell her it's time for bed. If you have a young child or grandchild, I highly recommend getting this book!
