In this day and age, cooking in the kitchen is a burdensome task and all the magic seems to have gone. What’s in a Kitchen? was created to bring the magic of cooking back to life and make cooking an enjoyable experience again.
Life is increasingly busy in this day and age, especially for families and their hectic day to day lives, where mealtimes are just another chore to be completed. In "What's in a Kitchen?" by Alice Miller, she asks readers to stop and take a closer look at their kitchen and the magic within.
The opening pages of "What's in a Kitchen?" is similar to a guided meditation and asks readers to look at their kitchen and notice all the "sights, sounds, and smells, to open your eyes, ears and mind!" The general structure of the story cleverly follows this statement and adds substance to this rather short book. Miller wants children to look beyond the normalcy and notice the abundance of colors brought into a kitchen as fruits and vegetables. Parents can use this to their advantage to get their kids to eat more healthy foods. Miller goes on to talk about kitchen appliances and their powers to create delicious food, and the various sounds they make. Then readers are invited to imagine different smells of sweet and savory foods that may inspire a culinary adventure in the kitchen for the whole family.
"What's in a Kitchen?" is short and sweet and will inspire kids to be more active in the kitchen and become more invested in what they eat every day. However, some issues kept me from giving a 5-star rating. The main problem was with some of the design and formatting choices. There are four or five different fonts used within the short page count, and this may be distracting to some readers. Also, the formatting of the text itself affects the overall readability, which is very important, especially in children's books. When using a variety of bright colors and backgrounds, you need to be careful and be aware of how that affects readability and may lead to eye strain for some readers.

I live in Michigan with my family. I love to cook! Fun fact, I never had a hamburger from a fast food restaurant. The family's favorite meal together is Pizza. view profile
