Walter the Water Dog's Big Rescue! is a wonderful children's chapter book starring TikTok and YouTube sensation WalterDood.
Walter's favorite thing in the world is water, next to belly rubs and treats, but can his love of water help him in the Top Dog Showcase? Walter's belly is all aflutter, nervous about which trick he'll perform for the contest. He couldn't think of anything he was good at besides swimming and splashing around in water, but that won't impress the judges, will it? Walter's performance anxiety is one that many performers face all the time. Regardless of age, anxiety over performing live and in front of an audience can cause a person to step away to settle their nerves, much like Walter did.
Walter's problem took a backseat when he found a lost puppy. His attention shifted to help Ollie find his family, and Walter asks readers to lend a hand in the search. There were some plot holes. How do the other canines and people know what Ollie's family looks like if they didn't recognize the sad puppy? How can Walter sniff out the missing family if he doesn't know their scent? Where was Walter's family when he was performing his trick? While these uncertainties had me scratching my head, Ronald the tuxedo cat had me grinning. His "trick" had me laughing out loud. What a silly kitty! (No spoilers)
Walter the Water Dog's Big Rescue! had many wonderful qualities. Readers will love the illustrations. My favorite was Walter's expression when he smelled Mrs. Rose's dog biscuits cooling on the windowsill. Kids won't be able to hold back a smile when they see Walter's trick, and they might even share what tricks their pet can do, too. Parents, educators, and young listeners will love the story's overall message: being kind and being a friend to all is the greatest trick of all.
Walter the Water Dog's Big Rescue! was a sweet story with cute illustrations. It's perfect for dog or cat families!
