2023 Pacific Book Award (Best Spirituality)

“A beautiful and accessible guidebook to help you do the inner work central to the act of being human.”

––Brian D. McLaren, author, activist, and teacher with the Center for Action and Contemplation

Find freedom from your inner critic and learn to let go of anxiety with practices and teachings from contemplative spirituality and various wisdom traditions.

I’m not good enough. I’m not in control. I don’t know who I am.

These constrictions are brutal. But who among us hasn’t felt one of these constrictions at some point in our lives?

Rooted in the teachings of mystics, saints, poets, and prophets, Unmasking the Inner Critic offers guidance and support for how to move beyond some of our most challenging fears and negative inner narratives.

With an intuitive blend of reflection questions, contemplative practices, action prompts, and his own personal story, Andrew Lang shares the wisdom from secular poets and therapists—as well as from Christianity, Buddhism, and Sufism—that has grounded his workshops for almost a decade.

Discover how to:

  • do the work of inner excavation with spiritual practices that hold and embolden it,
  • dig deeper for a more authentic way of living and being who you truly are,
  • lay aside the masks that keep you from fully experiencing the world,
  • engage the inner life as the beginning of sustainable activism, and
  • live a healthier, more confident, and well-grounded life.

The perfect book for progressive Christians, secular seekers, and those who are deconstructing Christianity,
Unmasking the Inner Critic helps us expand our spirituality beyond the institution of religion for our personal transformation and communal healing.

Move beyond the inner narratives that hold you back and rediscover the world as deeply interconnected, filled with inherent dignity, and inviting us to embody something new.

“An ancient-mystic-remedy for the bodily aches of internalized messages.”

––Troy Bronsink, founder of The Hive: A Center for Contemplation, Art, and Action

“A practical workbook full of introspective journal prompts, exercises, and resources–I’ll be returning to it again and again!”

––Melissa Reed, spiritual director and yoga instructor

Mind blown! Really, I am shocked out how good it is!
Mind blown! It’s an amazing book! I couldn’t stop and so I just read through the whole thing while our power was out all last weekend. I’ll go back through it again now - this time watching the online course - but this book is so much what hundreds of other self-help books promise yet fail to deliver. That it isn’t just a vapid self help book about clearing my own chakras or manifesting a big red bicycle, but how to take on a bigger more holistic view of life and my part i it. I am being sarcastic here and I am not.So many books and authors I have read over the last 30 years, I have come to realize, the last few years, only helped me become more distracted, more self-focused and more able to ignore larger and larger chunks of cognitive dissonance in the world and in myself, and in teaching me ways to mollify the symptoms. Most self help books promise but don’t deliver - I was a connoisseur for decades - making more people believe “it’s all about me - everybody else is just here for my amusement” which is my summary of all the New Age self-help books about creating your own reality I've read since the 1970s and more recent Prosperity Gospel proponents.Seriously, this book gets to the meat of the matter when most popular self help books I have read in the past 30 years only give exercises that helped me be even more dissociated from my true life. Distracted from the real issues, and trained to further be unable to place boundaries. And in all of that, never directly looking at or challenging the societal systems we were all swimming in.This book gets me to dive right in and face what’s real, and do things that are useful and truly helpful at understanding why I’m sad or fearful. It’s really stunningly good and presents these core issues lightly and in a conversational manner that I have found useful in getting an idea to burble in my head and it starts to work through the defense mechanisms I self learned or were passed down through family.I love anyone or anything that quotes Carl Sagan! My fav!Particularly germane to the election today and our current USA political discourse - I LOVED the discussion on Pg 78 about not vilifying the other side and better to not think conservative vs liberal- all are trying to make a better life “we can disagree without dehumanizing”I am shocked at all the threads the author was able to tie into this one book. So much wisdom and so much good here. It’s really good.

As someone who has or has-had (both past tense and ongoing) a very strong inner critic and while knowing that so many others experience this, too, and while knowing darn well how a repressed and shadowed inner critic can sabotage many aspects of our lived experience, it is with hope that Andrew Lang's work in this book will encourage those like me to take up the good and hard work of facing and embracing the inner critic within. And there is good reason to believe that others can and will through the invitation Andrew Lang offers in "Unmasking the Inner Critic."

First, it's accessible. It's easy to read. There are other books and resources available that address the inner critic in a round-a-bout and tangent way that can be inaccessible and heady. Andrew avoids this with simple language that anyone along the healing journey can enter into. This means it has been humbled and approachable. I think there are a good amount of folks out there intimidated by these kinds of resources. I hope folks stumble upon this and learn otherwise.

Second, its integral and it’s deep. It's not just for the head. Andrew targets the heart, the breath, and the body through prompts and exercises which leads, likely, to more embodied learnings. And by embodied, I mean the kind of learning that doesn’t just think but is – similar to Mr. Miyagi teaching Daniel in Karate Kid “sand the floor” and “wax on, wax off”. Furthermore, Andrew isn’t just interested in showing us WHAT we are experiencing but HOW we experience love, grace, and the inner critic.

Third, the constrictions are brilliant and all-too-familiar. Andrew uses the common languages and phrases that many with the inner critic (I’ve caught myself saying all of the constrictions more consciously in recent weeks). When I sat with each exercise in the book and sank into the constrictions (example, “I’m not in control” or “I’m not free.”) something incredible happened – I became curious, and I opened up. I hope others can experience that, too.

Fourth, Andrew offers plenty of grace and space but never shy’s away from inviting readers to the work. This to me shows loving attention to the precious and sacred moments that each of us readers will eventually encounter with ourselves, our true selves, when doing this kind of work. It also shows that Andrew is almost giddy at the opportunity for us to have that moment.

Fifth, Andrew is drawing from an incredibly deep reservoir of wisdom from other thinkers, philosophers, theologians, scientists, and activists that have all in their own way come to the same conclusions that Andrew does in this book. That offers assurance to me as a reader. This book also becomes an incredible resource for further learning.

Finally, Andrew is right to show us how culture and our lived experience can strengthen and develop the inner critic as a coping mechanism that enables us to live life. He’s also right to show us how, eventually, the inner critic stops work for us and then eventually against us. And, wow, how I wish we could all be free of this inner critic – imagine that!

I haven't finished the book- I am doing my best to follow the author's admonitions to slowly and thoughtfully savor/ponder the ideas shared. This is EXACTLY what I needed. As a nondenominational Christian who started life as a good Catholic school girl, I am well-versed in the guilt business...which is why I defected at the first opportunity to find a deeper relationship with Christ. But yes, I can sooooo relate to the whole trip with not feeling "good enough". My biggest takeaway thus far is that the negativity and judgement that leads to victimhood comes from the feeling of having been "done-to" by life. It's simply a way that we self-protect, we shut ourselves off and...live the best we can. Can't wait to finish this! I definitely recommend this to anyone who has dealt with any kind of trauma. Devotionals are great, but I needed something that would force me to just get REAL with God- AND myself. God already knows the stuff I'm dealing with. I needed some real talk about trauma and a new framework to look at and acknowledge what happened to me and how to get past it. I want to acknowledge what I went through and see it as WISDOM, and not as the result of a detail that I missed. In life, STUFF HAPPENS- and it's not necessarily ANYBODY'S fault.

When I picked up this book, I was intrigued by how Lang would describe the inner critic and if I would find similarities in my own experience. I don't have a vocal inner critic. By that, I mean that I do not have a dialogue in my head speaking to me of all the fears that Lang addresses in this book. However, I do know the feelings and constrictions Lang writes about.

Lang has written an easy-to-read, self-help-style book that uses the teachings of the mystics, practical body, and spiritual exercises to get to the heart of common internal fears we face regularly. He does this all while providing many anecdotes from his life and experience. As a student of the mystics throughout history, I appreciate Lang's use of mystical teachings in this book.

I recommend this book to anyone challenged by the multiple constrictions of life and seeking a more wholehearted life.
