On a walk home from school, a trip to the store, or playing in the park, the opportunities for adventure are limited only by a child's imagination!
As grownups, we sometimes forget the world around us is filled with wonder. But through the eyes of a child, ordinary things become magical props in a wondrous story.
In a hidden antique toy store, Abigail finds an old umbrella that sets her and her dad off on an imaginative journey through the park. Or is it a magical wood?
Unicorn for a Day is based on a true story that happened when an otherwise ordinary walk home from school turned into a magical adventure. Join Abigail on a quest of heroic bravery, magical creatures, and yes—unicorns. When they discover someone in need, it's up to Abigail and her brave knight to save the day!
What do a magical unicorn, a red umbrella, and a little white dog have in common? The answer is plenty in Golan Vaknin’s delightful picture book about turning the ordinary into a magical adventure.
A father and his young daughter are about to read a bedtime story when they realize they’ve run out of new books. Rather than re-reading old books, they create their own story, weaving recent memories and adventures into their own unique and creative narrative.
Readers soon join the author and his daughter as ordinary events become un-ordinary adventures in the vivid world of imagination created by this talented author.
Walking home from school together, Abigail and her father decide to do something un-ordinary. They turn onto a street and find an antique toy store. Whispers of magic emanate from within. Once inside, Abigail finds a huge standing mirror. Those whispers of magic grow louder as Abigail imagines herself a “unicorn for a day.” And ordinary experiences and items soon become magical adventures in this inventive and creative story.
At the store, Abigail talks her dad into buying her a red umbrella. But this is no ordinary umbrella. With a little imagination, it becomes Abigail’s “magical shield.” The magic continues as Dad and Abigail see a little white puppy dart into a nearby park. The park isn’t your average city park. In this world of imagination, it’s an “enchanted wood.”
Fearing the puppy may be lost or in danger, Abigail and her dad follow the little dog into the “enchanted wood.” They’re immediately enveloped in darkness. Undaunted, the duo presses on. In Abigail’s creative narration, the puppy becomes a “baby dragon.” Her father becomes a brave knight.
Upon reaching the crying dog, Dad the Knight discovers a painful thorn embedded in the baby dragon’s paw. Dad removes the thorn. The little dog is eventually re-united with his owner, a “good witch.” Adventure fulfilled, Abigail and her father return to their apartment, where they discover the Best Magic ever!
Told in the first person, this charming picture book features colorful illustrations, a warm and whimsical writing style, and brief text that will engage and not overtax young attention spans. Unicorn for a Day will certainly appeal to its target audience of children ages three to nine years and those who love them.
Hopefully there will be more books from this gifted author. I can't wait!
