A trip to the supermarket is nothing short of an adventure. On the clock, before rainfall and thunder, Mike embarked on a mission that was initially to buy more peanut butter and jelly. Though, while on his trail, he encountered some surprisesâMr. and Mrs. Carter, the caterpillars, Mrs. Birdie and her babies, the ant crew, and so many moreâall in danger of the imminent storm. Despite his allotted time to secure his groceries, Mike would still be caught in the storm. However, he would become a hero, leading the way to safetyâhis treehouse. Regardless of the sudden pivot to his plan, Mike was able to complete all of his missions successfully.

Mike has one thing to do â he has to get to the supermarket to buy peanut butter and jelly âto feed his hungry tummyâ before the storm starts, but things donât go according to plan.
On his way, he runs into caterpillars celebrating their anniversary and clueless to the pending storm. He then catches Mrs. Birdie and her babies when her nest falls and meets an ant crew building a house from leaves to take cover from the storm.
Being the kind child that he is â who doesnât even get into fights with his brother who had finished the peanut butter and jelly building a tower, Mike decides to help them all by offering them his tree house as shelter, selflessly forgetting about his own hunger to get them all to safety. Once they reach the tree house, news of this shelter had traveled fast and several animals show up seeking refuge that Mike quickly offers. One of the animals has plenty of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, so Mike manages to become a hero without having to starve.
The story was fun and sweet, teaching kids about kindness and helping others and showing them how being kind and helpful doesnât cause any lack on the end of the kind helper. I liked the message, and I liked the happy, closed ending.
The art work was also beautiful, authentic, fresh, and nostalgic.
The whole book reminded me of authentic books from childhood that so many writers these days have been acting too good for.
The book has all the makings of a fun childrenâs book.
It is also worth noting that the proceeds of this book support the mission of Vecaâs Hope Children Foundation â a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness for pediatric cancer and supporting children and families in the fight.
