This Class Can Save the Planet is written by award-winning author Stacy Tornio and illustrated by designer Kristen Brittain. Stacy has written many books and founded the publishing company Be A Good Human Co.
The beautifully illustrated cover immediately encourages the student to explore ways that a class can save the planet. The title might make students wonder what class can save the planet. Â Once the reader opens the book, they are welcomed by classroom 217 the class that can save the planet. Classroom 217 has written a letter that is more of a manifesto, to the other classrooms in the school. At the end of the manifesto, it has a place where the class can make their own goals to help save the planet and then a place for each student to sign they agree to help with those goals.
In this letter, classroom 217 has clearly and boldly declared âplanet-savingâ tips. They start by acknowledging this can feel like a big task, but they break it into easy-to-manage tips. For example, âInstead of reaching for new supplies, we can finish what we already have.â This tip stepped all over my toes. I was completely surprised to be convicted of something from a childrenâs book. I am guilty of buying new pencils and pens every school year, instead of using the âoldâ ones, thinking we will still use the old ones. However, as I am sure you know, we use the new ones, and the old ones sit there collecting dust.
This text is written in bold, multi-colored text, that varies in size in an engaging and easy to understand manner. The bright illustrations help accentuate the point that the text conveys. This book is written for elementary students, but with the engaging way it is written, younger children to adults can get something out of this small book. Every page has âinstead of thisâ âwe canâ encouragement and suggestions. They are so easy, that again, the youngest reader can understand and do them. While the suggestions might be simple, if we all followed them, we truly could have a part in saving our planet.
This Class Can Save the Planet is an easy thought-provoking read. I would recommend it to children four years and older. It would make a great addition to home libraries. I also think daycare centers, public and school libraries should possess copies of this book to share. It is a significant message and one that everyone needs to hear and share.
