Jabroni has repeatedly been on the receiving end of bullies' taunts. Fellow students called him names and said harsh things about him. They called him Jabroni the giraffe because he was tall and thin for his age (nine). They didn't attend his birthday party, which broke Jabroni's heart. They even told a new student (Peter) that Jabroni wasn't good at anything.Â
Bullies can make a victim's life unbearable. They hurt feelings, self-esteem, and sometimes a body. Words have a tremendous impact on our mental health. If a person is beaten down with cruel words day in and day out, they start to believe they are worthless. Jabroni felt like a failure, dumb, and sad. My heart broke for the fictional character because I've faced bullies. My children have faced bullies. I know their mean-spirited actions can be relentless. You stare at the school clock, waiting for the end of the bell to ring. You long for early days, holiday breaks, in-service days, or even a cold. Anything to give an ounce of peace from the harassment.Â
Most people have a breaking point - when enough is enough. Jabroni decided he would show them all that he wasn't dumb and good at something. Jabroni focused on his schoolwork and studied. A lot! I was thrilled his efforts paid off, and he earned top scores! With his confidence boosted Jabroni went to tackle football.Â
This short story has many powerful lessons. Things Will Work Out emphasizes the impact of negative stimuli on a child. It affects their studies, social skills, and mental health. With encouragement, they can soar academically and psychologically. Also, you never have to prove your worth to anyone. Love yourself. Believe in yourself. Don't stoop to a bully's level; keep your chin up, and realize you are bound for greatness.Â
The bullies in the book found the error of their ways. Sadly, that is not the case too often in real life. However, that shouldn't stop anyone from being the best version of themselves. After you finish the book, start a dialogue with your listener(s) about bullying, the effects of bullying, and how to handle scenarios featured in the story.Â
