Waddleton is a shy and “one-of-a kind aquatic dragon” or a “water dragon” in this sweet and uplifting children’s story by Kaitlin Nicole. A lonely soul in search of friendship and friends, Waddleton learns to overcome his shyness and reticence, reach out, and make new friends in this beautifully illustrated and highly readable book.
No one knows where Waddleton came from or how he arrived at Bumble Beach. But being different makes it hard for the water dragon to find friends. He’s lonely. However, the two human children he finds playing at the beach intrigue him. But making friends is a challenge for Waddleton. So he decides to take a risk and introduce himself to young Kate and Justin.
Now, you might think the two siblings would be alarmed when Waddleton hesitantly introduces himself. I mean, how often do you meet a water dragon on the beach when you’re building sandcastles? But Kate and Justin are delighted to make Waddleton’s acquaintance. They want to see where the dragon lives and are soon off on a grand underwater adventure, courtesy of their new friend.
This is a delightful story about overcoming nervousness and anxiety and discovering joy in meeting new friends. It’s well-written, lively, and creative. Meagan Schiele’s illustrations ably convey motion and imagination with a touch of whimsy. I especially loved the illustration of Waddleton creeping up to the house at night under a star-studded sky.
Amazon suggests the reading age for Waddleton is two to twelve years of age. I would say perhaps five to twelve years may be more on target. However, younger children will certainly enjoy the beautiful illustrations, lively text, and sweet story in this charming book. It offers valuable lessons about courage, determination, and friendship. Indeed, Making Friends would make an excellent addition to a classroom or home library. It would also make a great selection for a family read-aloud or a bedtime story.
Making Friends is Book 1 in The Wonderous Tales of Waddleton. Keep an eye out for more!
