Looking for a new story to read to kids or enjoy a beautiful picture book with them? Was and Das are here with an amusing & inspiring story!
The Tale of Was and Das tells the hilariously funny story of two friends: an orphan gypsy boy, Was, and his German shepherd, Das. The boy and the dog live at the dumpster halfway between Fartsville and Burptown — an area where, ironically, the people come for fresh air. The dumpster provides the boy and the dog with shelter, toys, and books. The pair fall in love with children’s books, especially picture books about dinosaurs. They decide to use materials from the dumpster to build Thesaurus, the biggest dinosaur in the world. Thesaurus becomes a tourist attraction and brings Fartsvillians and Burptownians together. This children’s book is the only one of the 2GETHER picture book collection that is not illustrated by Marin; Peter Stan, a prolific European illustrator created the entertaining artwork for this title.
Often I pick up books that I can encourage my 11-year son to read. Middle age fiction and young readers is an alluring category for me. Book covers are also a big draw - innovative, creative, artistic, deep, or just familiar. The book cover of the graphic novel, The Tale of Was and Das instantly reminded me of Mowgli and the Jungle Book.
Opening the book, I knew my son will approve. At an age when adventures of Captain Underpants and tales of the Wimpy Kid tickle his funny bone, I am sure he will dig into a book that has anecdotes featuring farts and burps! He will also appreciate that the content is separated from the visuals. Graphic novels and comic books can be strenuous due to images and text piling over each other. Not this one, though.
Coming to the actual content, this is a beautiful story of friendship between an orphan and his dog. It is the story of discovery and creativity with a touch of humor and wordplay. Amusing and cheerful, it can make an engaging read-along bedtime story and colorful addition to a child's library.
Written in a simplistic style, it carries a positive message, and the visuals are gorgeous. What's more, if you like this book, there are four other titles in the picture book series. And if you are like me, you will be wondering, what is the meaning of the names Was and Das and if there is a story behind it. Well, if you get to know, share it with me, too!

Marin is proud to be a self-published author. He writes the books, illustrates the stories, designs the titles, and publishes the volumes. He even creates new fonts for his publications to make them one-of-a-kind. He started his small publishing house FONTREAL (children’s picture books) in 2016. view profile
